Somewhere along the journey, yoga in the west has become identified as a stretching system which is only suitable for flexible people. The number of times I hear someone say ‘I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible’ has been enough for me to want to write about it, so that it can be shared not only amongst those who already do yoga, but those who don’t. I am sure that if you practice yoga, you have heard the same statement many times before. Perhaps we can turn this false belief around and hear them say:
‘I am inflexible, yoga is definitely for me’!
The physical side of yoga wasn’t developed for / by people who could do the splits and put themselves into knots. It was developed by people who started connecting to their body through movement and enjoyed it so much they spent more time moving and discovering their body’s full potential. As a result they became stronger and more flexible. Depending on what they started with (genes, bones structure, physiological tendencies, conditioning, lifestyle, etc…) and how much they practiced, some became capable of performing poses impossible for the majority of the population. Masters have shared their capabilities to ignite inspiration and although they succeeded in many cases, there are some for whom the goal seems so far away that they won’t even begin the journey (or stop as soon as they find their body’s limitations). The general belief that stops many from trying is : ‘I am not good at it’.
The whole point is: you don’t have to be good at it at all, it is good for you!!
We have been conditioned to want to do everything we do properly and at its best. Some would quite rightly say: unless you are prepared to do it badly you’ll never practice enough to perfect it. In yoga, we go one step further: you have to step aside and let aware movement and the breath do what is good for you. You don’t have to do anything!
Our body has its own intelligence and it does its best to heal and renew itself daily. However, our habits have created so much limitation throughout the body that we remain oblivious to, until we step on the mat.
In order to feel how these limitations get created, I’d like you to imagine wearing a leotard that covers the entire body from the toes to the top of your head. Now, imagine that it is getting tighter and tighter gradually (on a daily basis), but it happens so slowly that you don’t notice where your feeling of uneasiness is coming from. After years of wearing this slowly shrinking leotard, you start feeling uncomfortable so much so that you project this discomfort outside and, react accordingly. You do everything to forget this restlessness and go out of yourself to find a lasting escape from the feeling of being trapped inside. Out of nowhere, you start having difficulty to breathe, to sleep and you start having anxiety. All the things you’ve heard would worsen with age. As you see it happening around you all the time, you take it as a normality and give into it…
But perhaps there is another reason: Your fascia is like this leotard with the difference that it is not only around your entire body from the outside, but also around every cell, every muscle, tendon, ligament, organ….With age, with stress it tightens and in the same way that if you held one posture (let’s imagine sitting for hours on end), your leotard would lose its shape - your body’s fascia changes shape according to your habitual movement – or the lack of it. As the fascia looses its shape and takes on the shape of your habits, all the workings of the body are affected. I don’t believe this stops on a postural level, the fascia is very deep and hence all physiological systems are affected (circulation, nervous, lymphatic, glandular….). If you are not flexible, your fascia, your inner leotard has become very tight and is affecting how you breathe, think, relate to others and generally feel towards life.
Through yoga we start seeing the effect of our lifestyle in our body, we start seeing the habits that the body has picked up and we learn to undo those habits. As we work on opening and strengthening the body and freeing it from its tendencies, our mind is affected. As we feel more freedom inside, we start projecting this outwards and see the world as a better place to live in. As we feel more space in the body and the mind, our attitude changes, the world around us seems like a friendlier place and we start tuning into the wisdom of the universe; hence our life is enriched with more bliss than we could previously experience.
Open and expand the body and see for yourself how the world opens in front of your eyes. What you feel inside, is outside. What you see outside, is inside. If you want freedom and peace start by removing tension of the most tangible place you live in!!!

If you have ever found yourself holding back on something you really wanted to do, you are familiar with self-limitation. Limitations can serve us in some ways, like reminding us that we don’t have the ability to fly off a roof and land safely on our feet; and they can confine us in other ways, by creating doubt and fear about our ability to create more fulfilling circumstances.
I would think that most of our self-limitations are easily identified as helpful or harmful; We can decide which we want to keep and which we want to discard.
Take a moment to think about your own perceived limitations. What do you believe you can’t do yet? What do you believe you’ll NEVER be able to do? Why do you think so?
Once you’ve identified as many of your limiting beliefs as you can; take a closer look at them. Are any of them hopelessly impossible, or do they just feel that way? Have other people been able to accomplish something that you want to accomplish? Have you accomplished anything in the past that was difficult? How did you overcome the obstacles you faced? Could you apply the same process to any goal?

One of the most powerful elements of practicing yoga is the application of non-attachment. In Sanskrit, there is a term called Vairagya that roughly translates as detachment, or renunciation, in particular renunciation from the pains and pleasures in the material world. The observance of Vairagya is in one notion a simple concept, but in practicality is a challenging practice.
Our attachment to material things, people, and experiences is what draws us away from freedom and connection to Self. By having a grounded connection to Self, we are able to disperse the burden of materialism: desire, the need to acquire, and the false sense of existence through the association to things and others.
In this exploration of non-attachment, I have found an interesting experiment to play with. Our first experience with becoming attached to the material world and being carried into an existence of clouded truth starts from the formation of vocabulary. When we are young, the words that are often learned first are ‘my’ and ‘mine’.
In practical terms, we do become owners of things, possessors of products, and connected through relationships. However, when we choose to observe non-attachment and strip away the concept of “ownership”, we realize the irrelevance of using these two burdening words. It is true that when we take on ownership of something, we usually take on a social, moral, or civil responsibility. For example, we purchase a home, we are responsible for taxes and upkeep. But as soon as we attach the labels of ‘my’ and ‘mine’ to this element of ownership, we readily link this material possession to who we are – we allow ourselves to become vulnerable to judgment, vulnerable to the miseries of loss, overcome by the burdens of acquiring more and satisfying the desires of attainment.
By acknowledging how powerful the words ‘my’ and ‘mine’ are, I have decided to explore ways to eliminate these words of illusion from the vocabulary I use (notice how I did not say ‘my vocabulary’). Shedding my vocabulary of these words is the first process of managing the manifestations of thought.
Consider addressing how you use the words ‘my’ and ‘mine’ in your vocabulary. How do these words vibrate in your state of thought and the way you flow through life? What associations are you possibly creating when you use these words. Our words are an end-result manifestation to what vibrations are emanating from our soul and reflect the level of connection we have to Self.

There are at least two conflicting versions of what can be considered indicator of the General conditions of health and physical condition. “Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions and as a result, they get better answers.” – Anthony Robbins
Why am I so stupid?
Why I always meet the wrong guy?
What’s wrong with me?
Why I never learn?
Why am I so poor?
Those are some of the questions I often hear from others. Do you ask yourself the very same questions too? Or you ask yourself a better question? How do you feel when you ask yourself these questions?
When you put out a question, you’ll attract the answer. That’s the Law of Attraction.
Whatever question you ask to yourself, your brain will find you an answer because you attract it.
If you ask yourself a quality question, your brain will find you quality answer.
If you ask yourself a lousy question, your brain will find you lousy answer.
If you ask yourself a crappy question, your brain will find you crappy answer.
It’s that simple.
So, be careful of what you attract into your mind.
If you ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” Guess what? Your brain will find everything that’s wrong with you (even it’s not true sometimes). It doesn’t care whether the answer is correct or not. It just simply finds you the answer based on what you ask.
You get the answer because you attract it.
Now, what will that do to you? What will that do to your emotion? What will that do to your feeling? What will that do to your self-confidence? Think for a moment before you continue.
Let us change the perspective now.
What if you ask yourself, “How I can improve myself?”
When you begin to ask quality question, your brain will find or attract quality answer to you because that’s how it operates.
Your brain will begin to find ways for you to improve yourself.
Here’s another example from Robert Kiyosaki (This is my favorite example actually) in his book “Rich Dad Poor Dad”
Robert says, whenever his poor dad come across something that they want to buy, he’ll always say, “I can’t afford it” while his rich dad will always ask, “How can I afford it?”
Do you get what I mean here now? Both are facing the same situation BUT the way they react to the situation triggers different neurons in their brain and thus produce a totally different result which leads to the difference in the quality of their lives.
Here’s what I want you to do. Are you ready?
Ask yourself 5 quality questions everyday for the next 30 days and see how your brain begins to work differently.

Having been a student and teacher of Yoga for many years, I tend to always be coming back to this basic issue of 'community': how do you deal with students being chronically late? I understand the myriad of reasons (cough "excuses") for why people are late, but why should the majority of students who make concerted efforts to arrive early be succumbed to the disruption?
And what is this 'disruption'? You are settled in your meditation posture ready to ground and center at the beginning of class. Your teacher starts to guide you through the process of diffusing the day from the mind and body. You are asked to calm the face and delve into your breath. THEN, you hear it. The door opening, feet pattering next to you. A sticky mat slowly unrolling (or some just crack it open) followed by a slurp from the water bottle. You take a breath and let it go. Then, another and another and another....until you hear a whisper "Can you move your mat back a little?".
Some people would 'say' that as a yogi, you should be able to center regardless of the external environment. That is all fine to suggest in practical terms, but let's be real - it is distracting. Beyond this expectation to block out distraction, let's consider the element of energy. For the person that is rushing in late, more likely then not, they are carrying into the room a 'frantic' energy. Having a handful of people rushing in late casts an grounded energy into a room of people that are sharing and absorbing vibrations around them.
When I first started, the studio had a simple rule: Door is locked at the beginning of class and no entry following the start of the yoga practice. Many studios do not apply this rule from a business perspective - they are worried that students who take all this time to travel to the studio and then turned away would be aggravated and stop attending. But what about the students who come early and prepared that end up being disrupted repeatedly? Don't they deserve to be catered to? Doesn't this disruption harm the overall environment that you are trying to create in your studio? Would not a strict late policy make students more respectful of the class community as well as develop better time management habits?
So as a studio, you just can not fathom turning late comers away. Next best solution, close and lock the door during the mental centering - post a sign outside the door asking late comers to:
*Wait patiently for the beginning meditation to finish. Enter class QUIETLY and QUICKLY once the meditation is completely
As students, we need to be honest with ourselves. Am I going to be cutting it close? If so, just plan to attend the next class.
*You thought you would be on time, but still ended up being late. Just hang out outside until you know the meditation and centering is complete.
*To be proactive with time management, put your yoga gear on in advance and go to the washroom before heading out, so you are ready to go and cause the least amount of disruption.
The whole point of practicing in a group is to share energy and experience. As teachers and students, we should foster this supportive environment with as much attention and respect as possible. And this principle applies to teachers as well. Rushing in late to a full class of students hardly sets a good example of time management skills nor studio policy.

I have a fair share of goofy friends. One such friend recently asked me this question: “Do you belong?”
He then went on to say that he didn’t feel as though he belonged in this world. He wasn’t happy about it. The surprising part for me was when he said, “The reason I asked you is because you act as if you belong”. (Nah…, sometimes even for me, it seems like the earth is a very weird place!)
What followed was one of those special conversations when you explore something that you may not have previously verbalized. It is one of those delicious topics, mostly under the surface that makes all the difference in the world as to how we are, what we do and how we do it!
What comes to mind when you think of the topic, BELONG?
Trying to fit in, gain acceptance, seek approval, wanting to be liked and be a part of the “gang”.
We all want it, in varying degrees; from different people.
You don’t dress like them. You don’t like the same music they do, the same shows, and you certainly can’t relate to them on any other issue….
At a party,
You don't want to be the only person standing in the corner with a drink in your hand and a sad expression on your face….
Have you ever experienced the feeling of being left out in the cold, of wanting to belong but watching from the sidelines?
Are you the type of person who does NOT want to belong? Maybe you find it restrictive to be a part of a group.Maybe you want to be an individual.Maybe you resist being pigeon-holed by a label.Maybe you don’t know how to belong.Maybe you feel content just being you.1. The process of belonging to something should not always involve people and groups. You must belong to your own principles and dreams before all.
2. Don’t live your life through your friends. Live it through your backbone! At the end of the day, it’s not usually about who you are with; it's about just who you are. (Don’t misunderstand, we need friends in our lives. The context here is “losing yourself” to have friends.)
3. Not being able to relate to the people who “everyone likes” (supposedly) can make you wonder why exactly it is that you don’t fit in!
4. People who can’t accept you will do so out of their own emotional needs. It is THEIR problem and not a measure of your self-worth.
5. If you feel good about the fact that you are who you are, your awesomeness will eventually be clear to everyone around you.
For those people who can't accept me, my response is, this is the only person I know how to be, and I've worked too hard to give that up for anybody.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in whirlpool of day to day living that we lose sight of those things that matter to us, the most. (If you naturally start nodding to that sentence, keep reading!)In his book, First Things First Steven Covey describes a lecture he attended on the topic of time. The lecturer took a large glass jar and set it down on a table with some small rocks beside it. He placed the rocks in the jar and asked the audience whether they thought the jar was full.
Everybody laughed and replied that yes, it was full. Then the lecturer reached under the table and pulled out a container of gravel. He poured in the gravel and shook the jar so that the gravel filled the spaces that had been left by the rocks. Again he asked the audience if the jar was full. By this time they had cottoned on, and replied no.
“Good” he replied. And he reached under the table and repeated the process, only thing time with sand, which went into the spaces left by the rocks and the gravel. Then he asked what had been the point of the demonstration.
Somebody said, “Well, there are gaps, and if you really work at it, you can always fir more into your life.”
“No” he said, “that’s not the point. The point is this: If you hadn’t put these big rocks in first, would you ever have gotten any of them in?”
Let’s try to relate this illustration to our lives..
The “rocks” are representation of the things that are really important to us. The gravel represents the other things in life that matter, but on a smaller scale. The sand is everything else; the small stuff. If we put the sand and gravel into the jar first, there’s no room for the rocks.
Are you putting the 'big rocks' first, or do gravel, sand and water dominate your life?
As Stephen Covey says, take care of the rocks first –the things that really matter. Set your priorities, the rest is just gravel and sand.

And that’s where the title of this post stems from. I’ve read a lot about “how to get things done” and improve productivity. But despite all that well meant advice, sometimes, you just don’t get things done! So today, I thought of exploring a couple of reasons, why we don’t see the results we want at the end of the day.
Can you still see ways for something to be done better? Even if you can’t see anything, does it nag you that there must be something you overlooked? Your day can be going according to schedule until a friend drops in or a game of warcraft commences. May of these occurrences can be eliminated, those that can’t, MUST be controlled.

We are all unique and we want our dreams to come true. We all have a vital contribution to make to the planet and to humanity. The humbling realization that we are united in our very desire for uniqueness is something regular yoga practice can help us all feel. The heart opens as a bridge to the understanding of ourselves and others and ultimately helps long term students learn to love unconditionally. Within yoga postures students can see that everyone wants to find the best way to lengthen their hamstrings, relax their hips, build strength and bend their back. On a spiritual level we all share the same basic desire to love and be loved, to feel at home and be at peace and to find and share happiness with those around us. Even the loners and outsiders among us want a community and a place to feel at home. This shared desire for peace, love and happiness is perhaps at the very center of a definition of what it means to really be alive. Yoga brings us more in touch with this universal emotional connection to ourselves and others.
You are not the only one dreaming your dream, climbing your impossible mountain of success. In fact the mere fact that you dream it means that there are probably hundreds, thousands, if not millions more who dream the same dream. Perhaps it is not originality that puts us at the head of a movement but similarity, and as such, a similarity so great that it can bring together many seemingly disparate groups. Yoga has outlived civilizations and survived a historic 5,000 years because of its ability to bring out what we share. When you practice yoga you cross the gap between the personal and the communal with ease. You feel like your obstacles, pain, pleasure, success and glory are very much yours alone and yet you realize that many other practitioners share the same experiences. These shared feelings are the glue that binds the yoga community together. Whether you practice in a group or a by yourself, when you meet a fellow yoga practitioner you find something of a kindred spirit regardless of what discipline of yoga you both may practice. The contradictory ability to be both intensely personal and democratically universal is a gift that speaks to the core belief of yoga itself. Meant not to separate you into an elite yoga world, this practice actually means to connect you more with your ever-present humanity. The fabric that binds us is the opening of a true compassion, a belief in the fallibility of the human heart and a decision to nevertheless share love, be love and feel love. Yoga itself is nothing more than a mechanism for you to find your own uniqueness in a way that makes you that much more humble, caring and the same as everyone else.
We want to have distinguishing features that make our vital contribution ours alone. At the same time we want to be accepted for who we are and fit into a community of like-minded individuals, a sangha you could say if your community is spiritually-oriented. Yoga helps you find balance between the selfish urge to be resolutely individualistic and adamantly socialistic. The ability to maintain two apparently contradictory thoughts at the same time is a highly advanced cognitive and moral intelligence that requires both strength and flexibility. Yoga asks you to do just this each time you find balance between stability and release in the yoga postures themselves.
Yoga helps you realize the universality of both pleasure and pain and, perhaps, more important, the natural human tendency to run from pain and run towards pleasure. Once you experience first hand how much an injury hurts, how deflating it can be to backslide for no reason or how frustrating financial limitations can be you will never be able to close your heart to another being going through the same experience. In this way all the pain we feel when we practice yoga is itself a heart-opening path to the realization of empathy. Our pain is not ours alone no matter how intense it seems. Our loss is also not unique no matter how deep or pervasive it is. As many problems as you have there is someone somewhere else on Earth with more.
Every unhappy experience has a lesson held within it. If you can just get over the pain enough then there is almost always something to gained from what appears to be just another ordeal. In fact the very seed of awakening may lay dormant in the fields of distress waiting for you to nurture it with the water of your own consciousness. Tragedy unites us just as much, if not more, than the best of times. Just look at how many people love tear-jerkers like a classic Shakespeare or an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It is pain that the Buddha stated as the first noble truth and every painful experience deepens the bond we share with others. Part of what binds yoga practitioners together is the sometimes painful intensity that yoga students are asked to endure. If you practice yoga, it’s not uncommon for you to wake up before dawn, twist yourself into uncomfortable positions, lift your body off the ground until your muscles shake and do things that terrify you, all before breakfast. And of course, you often leave yoga class smiling, fulfilled and even more connected to your fellow students.
Practicing together makes the bonds we share in our spiritually oriented community deeper not because what we experience is so unique but because it is something we all share. The elation you feel when a posture you have been working on for a long time magically happens is often shared by your fellow practitioners. The vulnerability that cleaves off layers of defenses and leaves your heart open, tender and tearful is a state of mind that every yoga student sooner or later knows first hand. The inescapable greatness that lingers in the afterglow of a truly powerful practice brings out the best in each of us.
Humility begins when we realize that we are not as unique as we once thought. This might seem like a downer that forces us to give up on our special, personal dreams. But the truth is actually that when we see how much we all share then the motivation to do something that unites humanity with a common bond begins. And it is in this that the contribution to the flow of life that is uniquely ours to give can really begin to flourish. When we see that it is not the personal, but the universal that we all share then we can succeed from a place of true power. Success gained from a humble heart filled with the love of humanity is a gift that we each have to share in our own special way. The practice of yoga gives us the tools to better discover just how that perfect mix of our self-expression will take shape in the world.

I have a friend who is a really good dancer. She recently participated in a dance sport championship and despite her training and preparation, she ended up fourth. When I talked to her after words, I could sense the disappointment when she told me, “My best wasn’t good enough”.....
In my experience, it's usually something of a personal nature that carries over into every aspect of our lives. Sometimes, no matter what we do, it's just feels not good enough.“I'm trying my best at work and I still feel like a failure all the time.......”
“I study so hard but my grades are still low”
“I’m doing my best to make this relationship work, but it’s not going anywhere”

Surely, you’ve had moments where you felt your best was not good enough? You felt helpless and couldn’t really figure out what to do next?
Well, here are some steps you can take when you find yourself such a situation. This is a list of options to consider; to help you decide what your next step will be.This may seem obvious but when you feel defeated, this is the first thing that comes to mind. You start questioning your abilities and wonder whether you are on the right track etc.
If you feel you have potential to improve, you need to keep working toward that objective. When you get that feeling of “not being good enough”, you start being your worse critic. The mind becomes a battlefield of negative thoughts.
Remind yourself, “I know I can do it”. If not, your inner critic will say, “Who are you kidding, you have never done this before. What makes you think you’re going to do it now?”

Is there a way to measure progress? Revisit your goals and ambitions; you need to develop a personal plan for continuous improvement. Whatever you have in life, you have got everything you deserve because the actions you have taken to date, have produced it. These are the standards that you have to set for yourself; until now, and until you do something different you will not get a different result. Only when you raise that standard yourself can you expect to raise your expectations. I like to keep track of quotes that really speak to me and give me a different perspective.

Case Study by physiotherapist Emma Gray B.Phty – May 2010
Sharon presented to me on the 28th April for physiotherapy after reading our website. She was quite interested in the chronic pain treatments that we offer at Lifestyle Therapies.
Sharon had a car accident in 2000 in which she fractured her left ankle. Since then she has developed lower back and upper back pain and her ankle was still very painful and limited in range.
Sharon has been in pain for 10years and has also been through multiple therapists and therapies and has depression.
During the first treatment, issues arising due to chronic pain and depression were evident straight away – including:emotionally upset just talking about her painWorried that she was wasting time (having been to many therapists before)Hypersensitive areas of pain (Sharon was very nervous of me even doing massage).Limited ankle rangeLimited and apprehensive lower back and upper back range of movement.
I had determined that Sharon’s back pain had developed due to her asymmetrical gait and other issues arising due to this included a rotated pelvis.
Therefore, in treating this kind of presentation I would hope to improve ankle range and equalise some muscle tone and mobility around the spine for pain relief in the initial stage of treatment. However due to the hypersensitivity and apprehension Sharon was feeling this was quite impossible. So what could I do within the first session to decrease pain and apprehension?
Choices which most physiotherapists have on offer which would be suitable included TENs and muscle releases (gentle soft tissue release to bearable depth). After doing these Sharon had minimal improvement in range and pain scores.
Other treatments which I used since learning them at Lifestyle Therapies included psoas releases (using proprioceptive neuromuscular release, cold spray and trigger point releases) and Q magnet placement. After releasing the psoas’ Sharon felt looser in her back and had decreased tone around the spine. However pain levels were much the same.
I then placed Q magnets on Sharon’s spine and ankle – one at L4 centrally, one on the Right PSIS and one on the Left ankle.
The next time I saw Sharon she had no pain in her back or ankle. I found this unbelievable but sure enough in the first 2 weeks I have been able to successfully increase treatment pressure and retrain TA (which is usually inhibited by pain). We have also been able to gradually add some exercise into her daily routine without any ill effects and improve Sharon’s walking pattern.
The use of Q magnets in this chronic and complicated case has definitely sped up the treatment pathway and improved Sharon’s quality of life almost immediately.

It all began with one single book; an idea revolving the character of Harry Potter. When the first book hit the shelves, there was much hype around the world. At the time, I didn’t care too much of the book, thinking… it’s yet another children’s novel that delves into the supernatural realm of magic.
Years have passed since that day, and the Harry Potter series continue to be a runaway smash hit. What started out as a children’s book, has got massive attention from adults as well. Yes, my initial perception of Harry Potter books has changed!
Ever wondered how J.K Rowling, a divorced single mother, living in reduced circumstances, became a multi-millionaire within a short space of time?
Here are some lessons we can all learn from her success journey.
Did you know that it was during a four-hour train delay between Manchester and London that Rowling first put pen to paper about a young boy attending a school of wizardry? This is a reminder that whether you're stuck on a train, jammed in traffic or sitting alone before a meeting you should use this "idle” time to your benefit.
J.K Rowling’s first submission of Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone to a publishes was rejected. So, was the second one (I bet they must be kicking themselves now!). J.K Rowling, didn’t let negative thoughts get the best of her, when she was rejected. She kept on going. Her perseverance paid of incredibly, as the 3rd publisher accepted the manuscript.
Rejection doesn’t have to mean you’re no good; it can just mean you’re not in the right place at the right time!
Publishers kept turning down the Harry Potter book mainly because "it was too long". If she wanted to get it published, she could have easily reduced the number of pages. She believed that it was necessary and had enough faith in her creation, to persist until it was published.

I have been blogging for around 3 years and I felt I had good handle, on what to say and how to say it. I did research, prepared, practiced and was ready.
About 2 days before the presentation, I received a call from one of the event organizers. He asked, “Would you mind if we videotape your presentation?” I was flattered. I had never been videotaped before, and I told him that if I received a master copy, I would be happy to let them video me.
Fast forward to the day of the presentation
When the presentation was over, everyone applauded. I thought I did a great job.
Yesterday, I was handed the DVD recording of my talk. Last night, I popped some popcorn, called the cat, inserted the DVD, clicked on the machine, and sat back in my easy chair to watch “me in action”.
After 15 minutes of watching my 2 hour presentation, I was gripping the arm of my chair so hard that I couldn’t remove my fingers. In short, it was bad!
Mostly, there wasn’t anything wrong with the content. It was more to do with my hand gestures, the way I stood … (I could give a list of things here, but I want to save myself from any further embarrassment!)
I watched with pain for the next 1 hour and 45 minutes (even the cat ran away!)….
Then I watched it again! This time, I took notes.
I made a complete list of everything I did wrong, printed it out, and plan on carrying it for every presentation!
The moral of the story is if you don’t film yourself, you’ll never know how good or bad you are.
Recording myself gave me a reality (and a reality check!), and it provided a platform for me to learn and improve. Had my talk not been recorded that day, I would have never known the power of recording, and I would have walked away thinking I did a great job.
If I asked you how good you are, you would probably say, “I am pretty good”. I would respond and say, “Without a videotape, you have no idea”.
