Doing Yoga on a Carpet: Concerns and Modifcations

Enjoy this latest Ask An Expert Question regarding concerns of practicing Yoga on a carpet versus a hardwood floor.

Question: I recently moved from a house with hardwood floors to a house with carpet.  Is there anything I need to know about practicing on carpet?  Is it bad for me?  I find that it's slightly harder to stay balanced and I wondered if practicing on the carpet is somehow harder on my joints, etc...  any thoughts or recommendations?

Answer: Thanks for your question - it is an important one!  There are advantages to practicing on a hardwood floor:

*greatly stability in standing and balancing poses

*easier connection with the earth with the hands and feet

Disadvantages:
*can be uncomfortable in some seated, kneeling and lying poses
*can be colder for the body
*for studios, it is more hygienic

There are advantages to practicing on a carpet:
*cushioning for sensitive areas like knees, ankles and hips
*more likely feels warmer

Disadvantages:
*less hygienic (especially with more vigorous/sweaty practices)
*more challenge with balancing (I recommend stepping off the mat in balancing poses to reduce overall cushioning effect)

MOST IMPORTANT when doing yoga on a carpet:
*extra cushioning or "sinking" of hands can lead to compression issues in the wrist - you will see this where the wrist settles lower that the fingers into the mat and carpet resulting in unwanted hyperextension of the wrists -
this hyperextension and settling with body weight is called AXIAL LOADING or DORSAL WRIST IMPINGEMENT

So, depending on the thickness of your mat and carpet, you should consider the following:
*be aware of shoulder wrist alignment in poses like plank and cats - the front shoulder line should never pass forward over the wrist - minimize hyperextension of the wrist
*encourage body to be distributed throughout the entire hand and not localized into a small area of the wrist (planks, cats, down dog etc)
*use your lower limbs as much as possible (ie shift your weight off your hands into the knees in cat pose
*use variations off the wrists at times to rest your wrists (down dog on the elbows, puppy pose, child instead of down dog, cat on elbows, plank on elbows)
*listen to your wrists and rest when needed - when doing flows, avoid repeated loading of hands (ie think that you should have a series of poses that doesn't allow for some sort of rest for the wrists - cat to down dog to plank to updog to down dog to side balance = not good for the wrists especially when on a carpet)

7 Christmas Song Albums You Must Listen To This Christmas

Every where it goes, it seems like you hear some Christmas song or another. While some of them are just mediocre, there a few good Christmas song albums that stand out well above the rest.

Yesterday, I just tweeted about one such awesome Christmas album, and it seems a lot of my tweet people :-) liked it, and some even asked for more recommendations.
So I thought of putting together a post with my pick of Christmas song albums.


During my life time, I have heard many versions of the popular Christmas Song, Drummer Boy. You might laugh when I say this, but when I heard Josh Groban’s version of this song and his voice... it sent shivers down my spine!

All in all, Josh Groban's voice blends beautifully with the intricate and complex arrangements. Indeed, Josh Groban has a most soothing and angelic tone and Noel, brings this out well.


The Christmas song I liked the most was, White is in the Winter Night. It is has a calming effect and it's a sparkling Christmas track which open up the holiday feeling.

While it contains many Christmas songs, I consider it a seasonal release as many of the songs range beyond just the Christmas day.


I have been a fan of David Archuleta since his American Idol days. David sings with heartfelt and genuine conviction, and that's a hallmark for this Christmas album too.

Apart from the Christmas songs I was used to hearing, I got to know some new French Christmas songs too! Pat-A-Pan was such a fun, upbeat song and even though I didn't understand a word of it, it still remains my favorite of the album!


I was so blown away! The hard rock on the electric guitar, the rocking drums, and just rocking hard, but sill keeping the Holiday spirit alive with our favorite songs! This album takes Christmas music and puts a new, much needed twist on it.
Everyone has their all time favorite Christmas albums and this is in the top few around our house, and has been there since it's release. This Christmas album was recommended to me by a friend several years ago.
Apart from the songs we are used to hearing there was one song which is not that heard of, I Need a Silent Night.

I now, in turn, recommend it to anyone who needs a beautiful Christmas album to keep them in the TRUE Christmas spirit.



When you are you are emotionally exhausted by Christmas music, this is an album you would want to listen. It is more of a winter album than a Christmas album. It is such a great complement to the season of winter(for the part of world that has winter!), as it restores the balance by tugging in a direction opposite to that of Christmas music.
Sometimes, it can get a bit repetitive listening to the same lyrics during Christmas. So, I tend to mix it up with some instrumental Christmas albums.

All the Christmas standards are here, all in instrumental form (which is hard to find these days). Even if you aren't a classical music fan you will find these renditions exciting and fitting for any Christmas occasion.

Hip Flexors and Yoga: Our Friend or Foe?

Each time I step into a lunge yoga pose, I appreciate just how much my hip flexors play on my postural health.  I clearly feel how these large bands of muscles become tight by over-sitting.  I often question, then, just how practical yoga is when addressing most people’s issues with hip flexor imbalance?

Yoga expert, David Keil, presents our hip flexors as an important muscle group that can assist us in many of our forward bends.  The main group of hip flexors attach at the upper thigh and cross the hip to attach partially at the inner hip crest and further up on the lower vertebrae. When we forward bend, we can improve the fold at our hips by visualizing our hip flexors engaging. This ultimately reduces rounding and hence compression from going into the lumbar spine.   The hip flexors contract and draw the hip points into the thighs, from which, the spine can follow the fold with space and integrity.  We can most readily practice this in seated folding postures like Wide Forward Bend.  If the hip flexors are integrated as such, we likely feel, immediately after these folding poses, a need to expand the front of the hips with a back arching asana. 

Therefore, in forward bends, our hip flexors appear to be a resourceful friend to maintaining quality and safety.  But looking at a complete yoga practice, I sometimes question other transitions and yoga exercises that may be unnecessarily involving the hip flexors.  Take example lying leg lift flows that are used as a means to develop core conditioning.  The motion of moving one or both legs up and then down towards the earth against gravity is countered with core and abdominal contractions.  The ultimate goal is to feel the abdominal area strengthen.  But what is happening with the hip flexors?  The hip flexors simply add a force load on the pelvis, which, without a countering core contraction, would cause the spine to lift off the ground.  In a theoretical sense, this sounds all good.  But in practical application, not only are we strengthening the core, but also the hip flexors.

So what’s the big deal with strengthening the hip flexors?  Strengthening of muscles involves repeated loading and shortening of muscle fibers.  From a functionality perspective, the majority of people already have chronically shortened hip flexors due to prolonged sitting and/or poor postural habits.  This is well presented by Dr. Carla Cupido as part of lower cross syndrome – a chronic energetic imbalance that leads to lower back pain and poor postural health.

Understanding that most of us sit far too much and likely are dealing with lower cross syndrome issues, does it make sense to develop even more imbalance in the pelvis and hips by adding yoga exercises that specifically condition our hip flexors further?  As yoga teachers, we should be aware of the functionality of our practices.   Do they service our students’ needs appropriately and support the therapeutic benefits that a yoga practice should generate?   Are we compromising the gain of core strength with worsening musculoskeletal imbalances?  Every time the hip bends, how are the hip flexors being engaged and does this engagement serve a greater purpose?

As students and teachers, I encourage you to first look at your lifestyle patterns.  Our practice and the intentions of yoga postures should first address the needs of our lifestyle.  Does our practice work to restore conditions and issues that have evolved from daily activities?  Our practice becomes more intelligent and with more profound purpose when we apply practicality and functionality.

The Earth is cut up into segments of private property and national boundaries but no one owns the deed to the whole planet, except maybe all of us collectively unless we just have it on loan from future generations. Nations carve out no-fly zones but the air we breathe is free. The feeling of accomplishment that comes from attaining your dreams after years of hard work and dedication does not come merely from the good fortune of inheriting a million dollars. If we lost the internet tomorrow and the world financial system collapses humanity’s most essential nature would survive in our ability to love one another.One of the most liberating things about the practice of yoga is how it brings you in touch with the truly meaningful part of life. We practice yoga because of the feeling of elation and freedom that comes when you feel totally and completely at peace with yourself. The physical postures lead you to the discovery of a truly eternal happiness within. It is this sacred space of the inner world that yoga seeks to build a bridge to with every practice. No amount of money can buy you passage down the road of spirituality. Instead the only currency worth anything is the power of your own awareness. Not even all the world’s money can make you rich in spiritual sense. The kind of abundance that comes from knowing yourself at the deepest level is a truth that outlasts the test of time and inevitable vicissitudes of life. Sometimes stress can cause you to lose an honest connection to the deepest part of yourself and drowned out the quiet inner world. Yet when you begin yoga you open a door to the quiet space of listening where healing takes place.  At its most basic potential yoga seeks to reunite your body, mind and soul in one state of consciousness. Yoga helps you regain the lost world of yourself as you really are, peaceful, happy, free and beautiful.  Everyone wants to be happy and everyone wants to love. No matter where they come from, what language they speak or how different they may seem every human being wants to know real peace and lasting freedom.  Yoga allows you to reconnect with the grand unity that all life on Earth really is a shared dream of peace, love and happiness. Yoga is a process of union that occurs on the person level as you learn to connect your body, mind and soul and then on a global level when you learn to connect with other cultures, people and beings.We have all faced moments when it seems that our modern life is fraying at the edges. This is not the time to run for cover and abandon all hopes of recovery. Instead it is the time to apply the lesson of the spiritual discipline of yoga that teaches you to find your happiness and joy within regardless of external circumstance. Yoga opens your heart and asks you to believe in yourself beyond all measure of doubt. In this awakening of compassion yoga asks you to find a way to live a more peaceful life and be a force of healing in the world. When you find relief in the awareness of yourself as an eternal being capable of limitless love then the need to control circumstances eases into an ability to love life and have fun. The liberation of soul promised by the ardent practice of yoga is not something that can be bought, faked or cheated. Instead it is a diligence gained by any willing aspirant whose heart and mind can grow large enough to love the entire world, human and non human, painful and pleasurable alike.  The best moments in yoga cannot be owned by any lineage, style or teacher and as such they do not need any protection. Yoga’s greatest gift is the vulnerability that fills your tender heart after a deep practice session and the spiritual strength that gives you the benefit of unflappable faith and devotion. Even if you study with the best teachers it does not guarantee your progression along this inner path. You must also be open to receive the teaching and willing to put in the work that will assure your ultimate success.  Yoga begs you to ask yourself who you are without the normal repertoire of thoughts and challenges used to define your personality and demands that you have the courage to be totally honest and present with yourself. If you begin the search through the complexity of your existence and ask yourself who you really are without your thoughts and your known reality, you will find that at the center of your being is the search for love. When you find your own limitless capacity for love you will have touched the shining center of both yoga and yourself. You cannot buy a perfect sunrise or a perfect day at the beach, but you can be lucky enough to experience it. All the money in the world will not buy you friendship and love, but yoga will show you how to allow deep connections into your life. Even with a billion dollars you simply cannot manufacture the best moments in life, but with yoga you can learn how to live your best possible and be grateful for every breath you are blessed with.

Question: I recently moved from a house with hardwood floors to a house with carpet.  Is there anything I need to know about practicing on carpet?  Is it bad for me?  I find that it's slightly harder to stay balanced and I wondered if practicing on the carpet is somehow harder on my joints, etc...  any thoughts or recommendations?

Answer: Thanks for your question - it is an important one!  There are advantages to practicing on a hardwood floor:

*greatly stability in standing and balancing poses

*easier connection with the earth with the hands and feet

Disadvantages:
*can be uncomfortable in some seated, kneeling and lying poses
*can be colder for the body
*for studios, it is more hygienic

There are advantages to practicing on a carpet:
*cushioning for sensitive areas like knees, ankles and hips
*more likely feels warmer

Disadvantages:
*less hygienic (especially with more vigorous/sweaty practices)
*more challenge with balancing (I recommend stepping off the mat in balancing poses to reduce overall cushioning effect)

MOST IMPORTANT when doing yoga on a carpet:
*extra cushioning or "sinking" of hands can lead to compression issues in the wrist - you will see this where the wrist settles lower that the fingers into the mat and carpet resulting in unwanted hyperextension of the wrists -
this hyperextension and settling with body weight is called AXIAL LOADING or DORSAL WRIST IMPINGEMENT

So, depending on the thickness of your mat and carpet, you should consider the following:
*be aware of shoulder wrist alignment in poses like plank and cats - the front shoulder line should never pass forward over the wrist - minimize hyperextension of the wrist
*encourage body to be distributed throughout the entire hand and not localized into a small area of the wrist (planks, cats, down dog etc)
*use your lower limbs as much as possible (ie shift your weight off your hands into the knees in cat pose
*use variations off the wrists at times to rest your wrists (down dog on the elbows, puppy pose, child instead of down dog, cat on elbows, plank on elbows)
*listen to your wrists and rest when needed - when doing flows, avoid repeated loading of hands (ie think that you should have a series of poses that doesn't allow for some sort of rest for the wrists - cat to down dog to plank to updog to down dog to side balance = not good for the wrists especially when on a carpet)
