Get That Happy Friday Feeling At The Beginning Of The Week

Sleep Deprived ? 7 Ways To Revive Your Tired Body And Stay Energized After A Sleep Deprived NightIt’s Monday morning and I hit the “snooze” button twice, then finally got myself off the bed (At the start of the week, whatever side of the bed you get out of, usually feels like the wrong one!). My eyes were still closed as my feet slid across the floor on my way to the bathroom. My thought process seemed to have awakened and it was yapping away..
“Four more days until its Saturday again; I have five more months until my vacation, and there is another thirty six years until I retire! “
How is it that some people can get out of bed early and start their day with a smile, while others don’t speak in the morning until they get to work?

Side note: According to Depak chopra, more people have heart attacks on Monday morning rather than any other time.

I wish we could hit rewind and relive the relaxation of our weekends. Nice.. back to earth, surely, there must be better ways to make the start of the week feel less like a marathon! After some reading on the internet it seems we can eliminate some of the stress with a few tricks, put into practice over the weekend and first thing Monday morning.

Before you leave the office on Friday, make sure
1. To write the to do list for Monday
2. To De-clutter your desk
3. That you inbox is clear leaving only the weekend’s emails to read on Monday. Most people use the weekends as a time period to “catch-up” on sleep they missed during the week. Although I am far from a sleep expert, I disagree with this notion of catching up on missed sleep. I have found that this often throws off my sleep cycle making Monday’s wake up much more difficult.
Make sure you start winding down for bed at a reasonable hour to allow enough time for a healthy night’s sleep. What you do during the weekend has a big impact on the days to follow. Are you painting the walls, going rock climbing etc… don’t misunderstand; I am not implying that you should not do these things. Just, span them in a manner that is less exerting for you.

If you sit in front of the television glued to a couch most of the time… definitely, Monday is going to hard! Also, if there are TV programs that run late on Sunday night, record them and watch over the week.

Think when you drink(ahem..)

This can be a source of much apprehension (and annoyance) on mornings just after shower.
To solve this, try to decide the night before what you're going to wear and put them in a separate area of the closet, away from the rest of your clothes. Promise yourself that ensemble is exactly what you will put on that day. No use preparing if you'll be changing your mind in the morning! When you hear the alarm in the morning, the voice in your head is just coaxing you to go to sleep despite your best intents to want to wake up (Don't think about how nice your bed feels..there are better feelings out there!). Instead of giving it the chance to speak, immediately get your physical body out of the bed and walk out!
Once you last the first 5 minutes, you will find that sleepiness wears off very quickly and the day actually moves ahead as your other days.

Finally…
Your mornings set the tone for the rest of the day. A carefree and lazy start may be a relaxing way to start your day but it tends to result in a similar attitude throughout your day. Similarly, a frustrated or stressful start to your morning will color your attitude thereafter.

Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be all day hunting for it.~Richard Whately

7 Reasons Why Things Don’t Get Done

Reasons Why Things Don’t Get DoneIt’s been almost a month since I last wrote a post on Enhance Life. This is by far the longest period I have gone an post update! Truth be told, I had several unfinished drafts that needed a bit of tweaking before I could publish them. But for some reason, I just couldn’t focus or feel passionate about the topics I had previously written. This resulted in me having to write a post from scratch, which took more time than I imagined!

And that’s where the title of this post stems from. I’ve read a lot about “how to get things done” and improve productivity. But despite all that well meant advice, sometimes, you just don’t get things done! So today, I thought of exploring a couple of reasons, why we don’t see the results we want at the end of the day.

Without a specific sense of purpose, it’s impossible to effectively manage and organize your priorities. If you don’t have a clear idea of where you want to go, any road will take you there! The best to do list ever written is useless if it hasn’t been prioritized. Most people naturally work on the easy or fun things first. They may cross off majority of their list, but miss the most important items. Beginning your day without a plan of action is a formula for spending all day doing the wrong things. It invites anyone and everyone to interrupt your activities. You will passively allow unwelcome intrusions, because you’ll have no way to defend yourself. It sometimes seems like a good idea to put things off for tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day. But it catches up with you! No matter how organized your priorities are or how effective your daily plan is, you may be losing irretrievable time searching for things that are lost in the messes on your desk, in your files, closets and even your car! Are you unable to complete and release an… until its perfectly done?
Can you still see ways for something to be done better? Even if you can’t see anything, does it nag you that there must be something you overlooked? Your day can be going according to schedule until a friend drops in or a game of warcraft commences. May of these occurrences can be eliminated, those that can’t, MUST be controlled.

Decision Making On Money, Love, Work & Health: Why Decisions Errors Are Made

Decision MakingDecision making is something that happens throughout our day but with different degrees of importance, urgency and consequential outcomes.
Your life at this very moment is the result of every decision you have made along the way. There is no doubt how easy life will turn out to be, if we can make good decisions quickly and easily. But we both know that in reality decision making is not that clear cut!
Everyone makes wrong decisions sometimes or bad ones for that. I am sure you can recall moments where you said to yourself, “I wish I didn't make THAT decision”.
How many times have you heard stories about smart people making stupid decisions with their money? This happens all too often and baffles everyone. Have you ever wondered why intelligent, sensible people make such mistakes and rash decisions?

Guidelines, strategies that tell us how to make a decision. Sadly, it doesn’t always produce a correct answer. However, sometimes they are the reasons why people make the wrong decisions.

Given below are such 12 such heuristics, with reference to the book, Changing Minds In Detail. (A slight tilt towards psychology)

(Overconfidence barrier)Over confidence is feeling of exaggerated trust in someone or something, which is in decision making process, especially in evaluation of alternatives.
(Mood-Congruent Judgment)When we are in a good mood, we see the world in a more friendly light, and our judgments are more positive. Likewise, when we are grumpy we evaluate things around us as being bad.
(Prospect Theory)We tend to value a gain, that is certain more than a gain that is less than certain, even when the expected value of each is the same. The opposite is even truer for losses: we will clutch at straws to avoid a certain loss, even if it means taking even greater risks.
(Sunk-Cost Effect)We all know that we can reverse the past, and we can’t get back money or time that we already spent. But many people irrationally take sunk costs, time, money, or other resources which have already been spent and can't be recovered, into their decision making.
(Focusing Effect)When we are making judgments, we tend to weigh attributes and factors unevenly, putting more importance on some aspects and less on others.
This is typically due to factors such as stereotyping and schemas that we use that bring certain factors to mind and downplay others.
(Endowment Effect)The endowment effect, also known as “status quo bias”, is the phenomenon in which most people would demand a considerably higher price for a product that they own than they would be prepared to pay for it.
(Disconfirmation bias)When people are faced with evidence for and against their beliefs, they will be more likely to accept the evidence that supports their beliefs with little scrutiny yet criticize and reject that which disconfirms their beliefs.
(Bounded Rationality)We will try to logically understand things and make sensible choices. However, the world is large and complex, and we do not have the capacity to understand everything. We also have a limited time in which to make decisions.
(Ambiguity Effect)When people make decisions, sometimes they have a good understanding of the probability of something happening whilst other times the situation is ambiguous, whereby the probability of the event is unknown. In such situations, people are more likely to choose the former situation, preferring a known probability over an unknown probability.
(Availability Heuristic)We make a judgment based on what we can remember, rather than complete data. In particular, we use this for judging frequency or likelihood of events. Since we remember recent experiences or reports, then the news has a significant effect on our decisions.
(Biased sampling)When we need to make a decision and when we have very little real information about the subject in question, we will blithely base our decision on that very limited and hence biased sample.
For example, if we go to a restaurant for one meal and then someone asks us what the restaurant is like, we will give an authoritative pronouncement, based on that single experience.
(Gambler's Fallacy)I toss a coin and it comes down heads. I expect the next coin to be more likely to be tails than heads. It comes down heads. Now I am even more convinced that the subsequent coin will very likely be tails. If I am a betting person, I might double my bet each time, sure that I will walk away a winner.
(Hot Hand Phenomenon)When a person succeeds at something then they are more likely to succeed in subsequent attempts, whereas the truth is that they are still governed by the laws of chanced.
Whilst there is some truth in this in that a person may be particularly fit or their confidence is boosted by an initial success, the 'Hot Hand' phenomenon goes past this where people make assumptions that are statistically inaccurate.

Has your decision making been influenced by the above heuristics? Was the outcome good/bad ?

Network Your Way To Success: 7 Practical Tips

Any successful person will no doubt testify that in addition to their technical and professional capability, their ability to establish and develop effective/lasting relationships is critical, to success.

1. Whether it's “getting that first big break”, landing the job, winning the promotion, gaining the sale, [your list here] …. you NEED to get cooperation and help from other people.

2. People are more likely to help their friends than strangers.

3. When it comes to choosing a supplier or business partner etc., Most people prefer someone they know and trust.

Your ability to be charming, to be a genuinely likable and pleasant person, will open more doors for you, than any other quality.

In theory, building good relationships and connecting with people is easy. In reality, we all know relationships can often seem like fragile things. It’s often built and destroyed by the actions we take.
Here are several practical tips to help network your way to success.

Too many people wait for others to go first. They adopt the attitude, “When and if you do for me, I’ll do for you.”

Take the initiative. It doesn’t have to be too time consuming on your part. Give them leads that may help them. For example, connect people to other people who may be a resource to them.
Why? What better way to build strong relationships than by giving something of value to other people.

Many of us have people in our lives that we can't stand. Some would swear that they are just about everywhere! If so, it’s likely that you would try to avoid situations where you would be forced to deal with people such as these. Don’t let that person be you! This seems simple enough. However, how often have you experienced people doing the exact opposite? I have experienced this times. As a customer, I get told the work will be done tomorrow, and then it is not!
Set the right expectations with others and then live up to those expectations. If for some reason you are unable to meet these expectations, keep others informed in advance so that they won’t feel let down at the last minute. The relationship you have with your boss can be a major factor in determining your destination on the career ladder. It can be a wellspring of growth possibilities if nurtured properly or a career minefield if left to go sour. Thus, developing a good relationship with your boss is your best job skill and highly useful one, no matter where you work. Never participate in gossip or in discussing the business of coworkers behind their backs. People will trust you and know that what they tell you is safe in your hands. Alliances only work when trust is present. The ability to communicate in an informal and friendly manner is essential for every aspect of a person's business, social, and personal life.
So, make an effort to improve your diplomacy, style, pitch, vocabulary & tone. You are what you are today because of your family, friends, schools, previous jobs, and places you’ve lived.
Let the people that matter to you most know that you need them. Let them know they’ve helped or inspired you. Offer your gratitude and attention for their contributions.

If you leave it all behind, you lose touch with an integral part of you.

21 To-Do List Mistakes That Stop You From Completing Your To-Do List

to-do list mistakesYou use a to-do list to guide you; to plan and schedule what must be done. Having such a list is a great start, but do you get the satisfaction of ever completing your to-do list?

It’s frustrating.. and sometimes you wondering why?

1. You don’t always get the lurking items out of your head and onto the to-do list.

2. You are not clear about what you are trying to accomplish and why.

3. The to-do list does not reflect the most important task, you need to achieve for a given day.

4. The tasks are not properly broken down into sub-tasks.

5. Dependent tasks are not properly identified.

6. The tasks in the to-do list are too vague.

7. You have not “grouped” related tasks.

8. You haven’t prioritized the to-do list.

9. You don’t keep a separate list for each category (home, work etc).

10. You prioritize the to-do list incorrectly.

11. You keep adding new tasks continuously.

12. The to-do list is too long.

13. The to-do list is badly worded.

14. You have more items on your to-do list than you have time to do!

15. You get side tracked with distractions.

16. You don’t set time-lines on tasks.

17. Keeping track of the to-do list and updating it is too complex (electronic versions etc)

18. You don’t have the to-do list with you all the time and sometimes, unsure of what to do next.

19. You do tasks that are not in the list (that eats up your time!)

20. You don’t use your most productive hours, for demanding tasks.

21. You don’t review your to-do list regularly (morning, evening?)

Be ruthless… reexamine your to-do list. Are any of your mistakes listed here? Any more you would like to contribute to the above list?

Self-limitations We Impose On Upon Ourselves

If you have ever found yourself holding back on something you really wanted to do, you are familiar with self-limitation. Limitations can serve us in some ways, like reminding us that we don’t have the ability to fly off a roof and land safely on our feet; and they can confine us in other ways, by creating doubt and fear about our ability to create more fulfilling circumstances.

I would think that most of our self-limitations are easily identified as helpful or harmful; We can decide which we want to keep and which we want to discard.

Take a moment to think about your own perceived limitations. What do you believe you can’t do yet? What do you believe you’ll NEVER be able to do? Why do you think so?

Once you’ve identified as many of your limiting beliefs as you can; take a closer look at them. Are any of them hopelessly impossible, or do they just feel that way? Have other people been able to accomplish something that you want to accomplish? Have you accomplished anything in the past that was difficult? How did you overcome the obstacles you faced? Could you apply the same process to any goal?

Fall Vinyasa Yoga Video-Ease Into Autumn

Flow naturally into the elements of Autumn with My Yoga Online's latest yoga video by Melina Meza: Fall Seasonal Vinyasa Flow

In Ayurveda, the fall season is associated with the dosha – uneven energy pattern – called Vata, which is composed of the elements Air and Space and which promotes movement. As essential as Vata is to our health, it can become chaotic during September through November, when Nature is in an unstable place. This class embraces physical practices that complement the Vata elements of fall with grounding, stabilizing, warming, flow sequences and daily routines. Extra TLC is given to the legs, colon, lungs, and bones, where Vata can be in excess or depleted during fall.

How to become the person you were meant to be

February 15, 2010 | 22 Comments

If you’re ready for positive change in your life (not just idle wishing and fantasizing about change) then you need
to watch this short video right now…

[Positive Change The Easy Way]

Seriously, whether you want to lose flab, find a better job, have a bigger bank balance, or just find that special someone to go through life with, I strongly suggest you give this a shot.

You see, my buddy Natalie Ledwell (one of the creators of Mind Movies) has come up with a systematic approach to truly finding happiness and fulfillment in life that is SO effective, it’s almost mind-boggling.

Natalie is one of the driving forces behind the Mind Movies phenomenon, so she does know just a bit about achieving success!

But the thing is, like most of us, she still struggled with some issues in life.

Specifically, she wanted to drop a few dress sizes and just couldn’t get there.

Yet she knew and believed all the main ideas behind the Secret and the Law of Attraction–but somehow she still couldn’t quite make her heartfelt desire to shed the extra poundage into a reality.

Frankly, it bugged the heck out of her!

So she went on her personal “vision quest” of sorts to see if she could find a way to solve this challenge. Because
from her work with so many people she knew she wasn’t alone in her dilemma.

If there’s one thing I can tell you about Natalie, it’s that she is an incredibly caring and generous person. She feels
it’s practically a calling to support other people who are seeking answers in their journey.

So what better way than to find a solution herself?

[This is the result!]

And don’t worry, this isn’t about some strange diet of nuts and berries, or an exotic exercise routine. That’s just
the surface issue–this goes much deeper than that and can be applied to ANYTHING you want to accomplish.

It’s exciting and inspiring too.

Because Natalie broke the code! She actually found the missing piece of the puzzle that you MUST have to make
the law of attraction work FOR you instead of AGAINST you.

It’s shockingly simple, because it really all begins with just four simple steps.

And I don’t mean huge, painful, or impossible steps either. I mean truly SIMPLE and EASY steps you can begin today.

And the best part of this is that Natalie insists on making this available to anyone who is truly seeking the answers–so she is giving these four powerful steps away in this video:

[Natalie Gives It Away--The Four Simple Steps]

I watched her video several times, and I’ve got to tell you, I’m in!

I’m doing exactly what she so clearly outlines in the video. The question is, will you be in too? If you’ve got a goal (or two or three!) you sincerely want to accomplish, you should be.

Right off the bat, step #1 clarified so many things for me. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it already, because it’s such an obvious first step–but hardly anyone does it.

At any rate, rather than go on and on about this in this message, I’d really recommend you just watch the video.

It’s short and to the point AND Natalie has three incredibly generous gifts for you too, just for watching the video.

[So Watch It Now!]

And let me know what you think about it, OK?

The Science of Getting Rich

I re-read “The Science of Getting Rich” book by Wallace D. Wattles lately just to revise back on what I have learned in the past and there’s a part of the book that I want to share with you today.

It’s called Thinking In A Certain Way.

Look. Many people fail to manifest their desire or attract whatever they want in their life because they do not think in a certain way.

The Law of Attraction works in a precise and accurate way just like Mathematics. Most people just tell you to think of what you want but never tell you how to think in a certain or correct way and that’s exactly what I want to share with you today.

Just like when you want to send an email to your friends for colleagues, you do not send the letters of the alphabet in their order and let him rearrange the message himself, do you?

Similarly, when you want to send out your message to the universe, you MUST send it in the correct order or in a certain way to ensure that you message is being “received” correctly.

Do not just wish for what you want. You have too many wishes throughout the days, months and years.

What you must do is go beyond the wishful thinking. Go over your desire of anything that you want. Then, hold the crystal clear mental picture in your mind just like a sailor who has a clear mental image of his destination. Wrap it up with strong feelings and emotions. Feel as if you already have it.

All of that is still not enough to attract the things or dreams that you desire. The next thing you MUST do is affirming your thought as frequent as possible. There’s no right or wrong time when it comes to doing your affirmation. This is a process of verifying the thoughts that you have sent out.

Live in your dreams mentally with full of enjoyment until it takes form around you physically.

Follow these steps and watch your life transforms.

Bear in mind that this is just a tiny part of The Science of Getting Rich. To find out more about this precious knowledge and how to use the Law of Attraction in the correct way, check out more about The Science of Getting Rich HERE.

Goals Begin Behaviors. Consequences Maintain Behaviors

Note: A colleague of mine shared with me via email. I thought that this would be useful to you, thus decided to make it a post on EnhanceLife

"Once there was a bright young man who was looking for an effective manger. He wanted to work for one. He wanted to become one. His search had taken him over many years to the far corners of the world." Finally he met the One minute Manager who shared the secrets of "one minute management". He was neither autocratic nor democratic; neither tough nor nurturing. He taught three secrets of the one minute management to the young person. We also going to learn them.

"People who feel good about themselves produce good results"

The first secret of the three is "One minute Goal Setting". It is about making sure that we know what good performance is. One minute manager sets each goal and its performance standards with his subordinates in a paper with less than 250 words, something can be read in less than one minute. Once a while people can spend a minute and read the goal and see whether the behavior matches the goal. We certainly have this in our OPM process.

Goal setting is so important so that the people can feel that they are achieving. When you go for bowling and if there are no pins standing, would you ever roll the ball? When there are pins but if they are covered with a paper screen, you would try rolling and might hear some sounds which makes you happy. But you would not enjoy the game much. So the manager responsibility is to make the pins visible and then there is no doubt that the people will enjoy the work.

"Help People to Reach Their Full Potential. Catch Them Doing Something Right"

Most often manages catch people when they do something wrong. They are watching behind the paper screen so that they can see the pins well. They would say that you missed eight pins instead of telling that you hit two. The second secret of one minute management is "One Minute Praising". People should told right from the start that you are going to let them know how they are doing. Once a good work done people should be praised immediately and it should be specifically about the particular work and not a general praise. Just spend only one minute for this. Tell them how good you feel and let them feel it and encourage them to do more of the same.

"We are not just our behavior. We are the person managing our behavior"

The third secret of the one minute manager is "One minute Reprimand". Sometimes really bad things happen and then, you need to go for one minute reprimand. As in the previous secret your should do this immediately. Divide your minute into two. In the first 30 second, tell what went wrong and tell how you feel about it and let them also feel it. During the second half you should remind them how valuable they are to you and to the organization. Reaffirm that you condemn the behavior but you value the person because the person is not just the behavior. Finally agree not to repeat the same.

"The best minute you spend is the one you invest in people"

"Everyone is a potential winner. Some People are disguised as losers, Don't let their appearances fool you"

The most important lesson we can learn from this book is,

"Goals begin behaviors. Consequences maintain behaviors."

Finally our young guy became an effective manager by learning and practicing the above secrets and came up with a new principal.

The Power of Question

“Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions and as a result, they get better answers.” – Anthony Robbins

Why am I so stupid?

Why I always meet the wrong guy?

What’s wrong with me?

Why I never learn?

Why am I so poor?

Those are some of the questions I often hear from others. Do you ask yourself the very same questions too? Or you ask yourself a better question? How do you feel when you ask yourself these questions?

When you put out a question, you’ll attract the answer. That’s the Law of Attraction.

Whatever question you ask to yourself, your brain will find you an answer because you attract it.

If you ask yourself a quality question, your brain will find you quality answer.

If you ask yourself a lousy question, your brain will find you lousy answer.

If you ask yourself a crappy question, your brain will find you crappy answer.

It’s that simple.

So, be careful of what you attract into your mind.

If you ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” Guess what? Your brain will find everything that’s wrong with you (even it’s not true sometimes). It doesn’t care whether the answer is correct or not. It just simply finds you the answer based on what you ask.

You get the answer because you attract it.

Now, what will that do to you? What will that do to your emotion? What will that do to your feeling? What will that do to your self-confidence? Think for a moment before you continue.

Let us change the perspective now.

What if you ask yourself, “How I can improve myself?”

When you begin to ask quality question, your brain will find or attract quality answer to you because that’s how it operates.

Your brain will begin to find ways for you to improve yourself.

Here’s another example from Robert Kiyosaki (This is my favorite example actually) in his book “Rich Dad Poor Dad”

Robert says, whenever his poor dad come across something that they want to buy, he’ll always say, “I can’t afford it” while his rich dad will always ask, “How can I afford it?”

Do you get what I mean here now? Both are facing the same situation BUT the way they react to the situation triggers different neurons in their brain and thus produce a totally different result which leads to the difference in the quality of their lives.

Here’s what I want you to do. Are you ready?

Ask yourself 5 quality questions everyday for the next 30 days and see how your brain begins to work differently.

Check this mind power resources if you want to maximize the potential and the power of your mind to your own benefit.

Design Your Fall Yoga Ritual for Vitality

In fall, the Vata dosha becomes predominant, potentially taking your physical, mental and/or energetic bodies out of balance. The following yoga and wellness tips from Melina Meza's new book, “Art of Sequencing – Volume 2” will help to balance Vata, creating a more stable, grounding presence during the fall.
FALL DAILY RITUAL (Dinacharya)
Ideally, all these practices can be followed, but if the list seems overwhelming, choose a few practices that resonate with you and commit to them for up to three months.
·        Try to stick to a daily routine in the fall, scheduling more down time than usual to prevent Vata imbalances.
·        Wake up at 5:00-6:00 am (do your best!) and greet the day with gratitude for another opportunity to celebrate life.
·        Wash your face, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, do a neti pot, and lubricate your nostrils with oil or ghee.
·        Drink hot lemon water with a little salt in the morning to stimulate elimination.
·        Meditate on grounding imagery, like a stone or a mountain.
·        Do slow, warming, rhythmic movement or asana practices to set the pace for the day. Moving slowly and consciously in your asana practice will also help to stabilize your mind and make it easier to stay focused throughout the day.
·        Perform abhyanga with warm sesame oil. Leave the oil on your skin for 10-30 minutes to help nourish and protect your skin from drying out; follow with a warm shower.
·        Homemade soups are good dietary mainstays during this season, as they are both hot and liquid, the opposite of Vata, which is cold and dry.  In your soups or stews include copious amounts of root vegetables and hearty grains to keep the essence of the earth down in your belly. In general, prepare warm, moist foods for every meal during fall.
·        Sit down to eat at regular times throughout the day; the more routine your meal times are, the better. Practicing eating as a meditation, chewing your food until it’s liquid, and putting the utensil down between bites are just a few simple ways to ensure good digestion and strong agni.
·        Increase your enjoyment of foods that are sweet (like rice, milk, and dates), sour (like yogurt and fermented foods), and salty (like sea kelp) as they help calm down and nurture Vata.
·        Avoid starting too many new projects that pull your energy in multiple directions! Remember fall is a time to wrap up projects and prepare for winter hibernation.
·        Aim for bedtime before 10:00 pm and get a full eight hours of sleep each night.
GENERAL ASANA TIPS FOR THE FALL
Incorporate more of the following into your practice:
·        A routine where the time of day and length of your practice is consistent. It can be helpful to build your routine by writing down your committed yoga and exercise time slots on a weekly calendar.
·        Yoga poses that allow you to incorporate the bandhas to guide prana deep into your body, which then prepares you for: pratyahara (the moment your sense organs no longer seek nourishment from the external environment), dharana (concentration), and dhyana (steady concentration or meditation).
·        Steady, slow, mindful Sun Salutations to increase circulation of blood through your muscles and organs as well as standing poses, squats, twists, bridge pose, supported back bends, and inversions to clear the lungs and maintain heat in your core.
·        Practice seated poses that allow the breath to move freely into the lower abdomen and pelvic floor, the parts of the body ruled by Vata.
·        Take long savasanas to stabilize Vata. Cover yourself with a blanket to stay warm, use an eye pillow to soothe the eyes, and drape a sandbag or two over your thighs or ankles to promote the downward movement of prana deep into the bones of your legs. The extra weight of the sandbags reinforces the idea of staying present and can be useful for anyone at anytime who struggles with staying present in savasana.

Find the Tone of Your Yoga Breath

Find the Tone of Your Yoga Breath

Breath is the foundation in yoga that fuels the physical practice with vitality while saturating ourselves with awareness to Self.  Through conscious breathing, we empower our yoga practice to be the bridge between body and spirit.  Yoga teachers continuously emphasis the importance of breath as we enter, exist, and exit our yoga poses.  But what is it that makes the breath empowering?  I feel that it is not just processing of breathing, but the actual tone of our unique breathwork that enhances the benefits of our yoga practice.

What is tone?

Tone can be viewed as the quality of our breathing.  Note the word 'quality' versus quantity.  Often, we can see in yoga classes, students striving to develop a powerful, pronounced breath.  We can hear the rumbling of Ujjaiya (victorious breath) throughout the room.  But if we listen attentively and carefully, this eager use of breath can be misconstrued into a pattern of struggle.  The breath is pushed aggressively into the corners of the lungs.  This agressive nature vibrates harshly through the vocal chambers-excessive narrowing of this vocal passage slows down the breath, but places unnecessary pressure on breathing mechanics.  This emphasis of quantity over quality acts negatively on blood pressure and distorts the intention of calming the nervous system.

With all this, Ujjaiya is an incredible breathwork to add to the practice.  But Ujjaiya or basic breathing should facilitate connection and not become an extension of the Ego-a manifestation of physical drive.  Just like we are best suited to start every practice by slowly introducing warmth and awareness into the body, so too should we ease into our breathing patterns.

Take the time to center and observe.  Is there resistance in breathing?  Where does the breath naturally flow at first?  Take the breath initially into those places of ease and become awake to the quality.  Enjoy with no force, and at the most, only subtle effort drawing in the breath and the accompanying prana (life energy).   If adding Ujjaiya, softly bring narrowing to the throat and observe the body's reaction.  The vocal passage does not become rigid.  The breath continues to flow in a fluid, calming manner.  We remain sensitive to the sound as well as to the texture.  Feel the coolness of breath as it enters, the warmth of the breath as it exits.  Breathing in harmonious space, breathing out leaving release and acceptance.

Our breath is our guide to shedding the Ego.  Each whisper in the throat acts as reminder to listen to the physical body and dissipate the desires of the mind.  Each rise of the inhale remains complete bringing control, patience and grace to our movements.  Each fall of the exhale brings light and relevance to the changes that build in our practice.  Breath is our Yoga.  The quality and tone of the breath are a reflection of the integrity and state of our poses.  From this quality in the physical practice and breathwork, we envelop our energy and spiritual practice with purpose and relevance.

Long term disc pain successfully treated and surgery avoided.

By Angela Bordignon – recent patient of Dianne Hermans.

I have had a disc issue for about 15 years, mainly concerning deterioration and a herniated disc at L5/S1, which I have managed very successfully via chiropractic treatment.  Twelve months ago I started experiencing major spasms in my back, developed sciatica down one leg and had constant hipflexor tightness.  After 8 months of weekly visits to my chiropractor we realised things weren’t getting any better so I had an MRI scan and was referred to a neurosurgeon in preparation for a potential disk operation to remove the herniation, which was causing my sciatica. At that point, I felt surgery might be my only option but wanted to try the chronic pain guaranteed service with Lifestyle Therapies before I committed to surgery.  I now realise that if the symptoms aren’t subsiding after 12 weeks of consistent treatment, you probably need to try something else.

When I contacted Lifestyle Therapies and commenced the chronic pain guaranteed service, I was in chronic pain and discomfort daily (and had been for 8 months).  I have always been a very active person but was at a stage where my disc issue was having a considerable effect on all areas of my life (physically, mentally and emotionally).  I didn’t like to take pain killers, unless I was in crisis mode, as I found they caused more problems for my digestive system.  I was unable to exercise other than walk slowly, was constantly stiff, couldn’t sit for any longer than 30 minutes at a time.  I was becoming quite depressed and tied of trying not to be depressed!!

I felt Lifestyle Therapies offered a wide range of services which seemed to cover all areas of health in relation to my situation and I felt I would be in good hands.  I found the team very friendly and the environment very relaxing. The initial evaluation was very thorough compared to anything I had experienced before.  After a lengthy assessment, massage and ultra sound, they taped two Q magnets to specific areas of my body to alleviate the pain caused by my pinched sciatic nerve.  It was also suggested I may have issues with iliopsoas muscles. I was provided some reading material and after reading this, I fully believe this has been a major contributing factor to my issue. I left with more hope of a recovery than I’d felt in a long time.

My expectations around Q magnet therapy were positive as I believe you should keep an open mind to new treatments.  I had a lot of questions though and the team at Lifestyle Therapies have always taken the time to explain the issue in layman’s terms not to mention been very honest.  Two weeks following my first visit my pain and muscle spasms had subsidised. Then following weekly appointments for approximately 4-5 months I am now completely pain free and have finally removed my beloved Q magnet and feel amazing.

Lifestyle Therapies have had a huge affect on all areas of my life and I mean ALL AREAS. I know my disc issue is a pinch of salt in the ocean, compared to some people’s health issues. I think when you have lived a generally pain free life and you know the issue your experiencing isn’t going to kill you, but isn’t going away all the same, it’s very frustrating. I am an outgoing person and I personally needed to find a solution or be told it was going to be this way forever and then I could accept it.  I remember thinking that footie players hurt themselves like this every weekend and recover through treatment so there’s no reason why I can’t. I have obviously also had to make some changes in my life to maintain my pain free status like the way I bend to pick things up, do my house cleaning, sit at work and stretch every day. This has not been limiting at all though as the more I did it, the habit formed.

I have recently joined the gym again, plan to start kayaking soon.  I don’t felt my back restricts me in any way shape or form. I just need to remember it is a little weaker now but if I look after myself and be careful, it will hopefully be just fine.  Thanks to Di and the team at Lifestyle Therapies I have a drug free natural pain relief solution that actually works and doesn’t seem to have any negative impacts.

I owe a lot to the team at Lifestyle Therapies as they have changed my life. I only wish I had gone to see them sooner.  I highly recommend the Q magnet therapy for natural pain relief. I was unsure at first, but I had nothing to lose and look where I am today. There’s nothing better in life than being pain free!

The One Minute Manager: Highlights From The Book

The One Minute Manager, was my week-end reading (last week). I thought of sharing my reading notes as a blog post.

"Once there was a bright young man who was looking for an effective manger. He wanted to work for one. He wanted to become one. His search had taken him over many years to the far corners of the world." Finally he met the "One minute Manager" who shared the secrets of "one minute management". He was neither autocratic nor democratic; neither tough nor nurturing. He taught three secrets of the one minute management to the young person.
So here we go...

People who feel good about themselves produce good results

One minute manager sets each goal and its performance standards with his subordinates in paper with less than 250 words; something that can be read in less than one minute!
Occasionally, people can spend a minute of their time and read the goal and see whether their behavior matches the goal.

When you go for bowling and if there are no pins standing, would you ever roll the ball?
When there are pins but if they are covered with a paper screen, you would try rolling and might hear some sounds which makes you happy. But you would not enjoy the game much.
So the manager's responsibility is to make the pins visible!

Help People to Reach Their Full Potential. Catch Them Doing Something Right
The book argues that managers often "catch" people when they do something wrong. They are watching behind the paper screen so that they can see the pins well. They would say that you missed eight pins instead of telling that you hit two.

That's where the second secret of one minute management is "One Minute Praising". Good work should be praised immediately and it should be specifically about the particular work and not a general praise.

We are not just our behavior. We are the person managing our behavior
There are times, when bad things happen due to mistakes. That's where you need to go for one minute reprimand. As in the previous secret, this should be done immediately. Divide your minute into two. In the first 30 second, tell what went wrong and tell how you feel about it. During the second half you should remind them how valuable they are to you and to the organization. Re-affirm that you condemn the behavior but you value the person and that the person is not just the behavior!

Finally, ensure that an agreement is made not to repeat the same mistake.

Worthy quotes
"The best minute you spend is the one you invest in people"

"Everyone is a potential winner. Some People are disguised as losers, Don't let their appearances fool you"

"Goals begin behaviors. Consequences maintain behaviors."

Finally, our young guy became an effective manager by learning and practicing the above secrets and came up with a new principal.

"Share it with others"

And the last principal forced me to write this :-).

When The Right Decision Turns Out To Be Wrong

decision makingI recently bought a new sofa and I had put off buying throw pillows until I enough coins in my saving jar! I was happy (and proud!) that after a few months of saving I could finally afford the throw pillows. So yesterday I went to the store and was looking over the various pillows. My sofa's fabric is a sage paisley pattern with brown and burgundy accents. After much deliberation (and annoyance to the sales lady!) I decided to go with plush brown pillows.

After returning home I soon realized that the brown didn't coordinate nicely with the couch. I had to make another trip to the store, pleaded with my most charming smile and managed to exchange the brown with some burgundy pillows. Yap that looked quite lovely with the sofa!
This is an example of a decision that was easily reversed.

We often have to make decisions upon something in life. Those things could be important matters or trivial ones and sadly life doesn't always seem to allow a retreat option in decision making.

I may not be the best person to offer anyone sage advice regarding decision making. But I do think it is an issue that each of us are faced with on a daily basis throughout our lifetimes and thus worth discussion. I often tell people that caution is my middle name since I can sit on making a decision for a very long time before acting upon it.

We often make the decision thinking it’s the “right”/best/ suitable decision. Sometimes, it is. Other times, it turns out the be the wrong one. Yes, the right decision, turned out to be wrong.

What was the last decision that you made that turned out to be wrong? Looking back at it now, why did the decision turn out to be wrong?
1. Did you rush into the decision?
2. Did you let emotions sway the decision?
3. Didn’t you consider all possibilities?
4. Did you have sufficient information to make the decision?
5. Did other people influence the decision?
6. Did you take the “comfortable” decision because you were afraid of other options?

There ain't no answer. There ain't going to be any answer. There never
has been an answer. That's the answer. ~Gertrude Stein
