I am horrified that people in the United States are still not accepting of breast feeding. Seriously, human milk is the perfect food for human babies, just like cow’s milk is perfect for calves and goat’s milk is perfect for baby goats. Instead of shunning women who want to breast feed, we should be encouraging them and educating them on how to product more breast milk. Breast fed babies do better in life – they are happier, smarter, calmer, and more connected with others. Why this is even a debatable issue is beyond my understanding.

Sacred cows and why do we need to wear good joggers when we run?

Little pleases me more than when sacred cows fall. Like Dr Barry Marshall from Perth who was ridiculed for years after he discovered that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori lived in the stomach and were the cause of stomach ulcers.

To be honest I had never given a thought to NOT running in a good quality pair of joggers. Not until my brother John suggested it and then I heard this program on ABC radio with a lecturer in functional anatomy and saw this research article. It’s only the commercial interests behind running shoes that so entrenches us to this paradigm. So I gave it a go.

The first time after I went running barefoot and gave my feet a wash in the bath, I couldn’t believe how alive my feet felt. All that sensory input the soles of my feet had been missing out on for so long. On Sunday I completed a 3km barefoot run and I think from now on it’s barefoot for me, although I’m not sure if I’ll ever conquer a gravel road!

8 Tips to Help You De-Stress, Fast

Who’s not stressed? All of us—no matter how yogic or meditative or all-round relaxed—get worked up sometimes. (Except maybe my always-smiling, always pretty happy friend Swami Maheshananda Saraswati—but he’s a Swami.) Stress is one of the most pressing and prevalent health concerns in today’s busy world. We’re all working to the max, putting in longer hours than ever before, raising families, staying fit, and trying to stay connected with friends and family. It’s a lot.

That’s why My Yoga Online’s Michelle Trantina came up with the De-Stress Express Whole Health Program. We understand how busy life can be, and how important whole health is in order to manage it all. This program is jam-packed with stress-busting tips and tools for you to take away and use in your day-to-day life. We’re sharing eight of our favourites here, and eight more are on the way over the next eight days on Facebook and Twitter. Don’t miss ‘em!

1.       The effects of the fight or flight response, aka stress response, don't always go away once the stressor is gone. Stress hormones can continue to be released when thinking of the stressor; tensed muscles won't release; and digestion can remain inhibited. Plus, your body treats the stress as real, even if you're simply re-living or imagining it—i.e. even if it's just in your head.

2.       The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is here to help. The PNS governs actions opposite to the sympathetic nervous system—the "digest and rest" ones. It lowers breathing and heart rates, decreases blood pressure, and increases blood flow to the intestines and reproductive organs. In other words, it calms us down. We can help the PNS do its thing: Breathe deeply, exercise and do asana, eat a mindful, balanced diet, take digestive supplements (if your doc says it's okay), and do anything else that helps you calm down.

3.       Try keeping track of your stress in a journal. Write down what you were doing when you felt stressed; you’ll begin to see patterns, and, once you have, can begin to take preventative or reactive steps, according to your personal needs.

4.       Use your commute. Whether you’re on a bus, in your car, or on your bike, you can transform this time into a meditation by simply focusing on long, deep, breathing.

5.       Eckhart Tolle, Ram Das, and tons of other spiritual leaders, are right. Stay in the now. Don’t multi-task. Do one thing, talk to one person, and take on one job at a time.

6.       Remember that, as master yoga teacher Max Strom says, we can’t feel gratitude and stress at the same time. Try remembering to give thanks: For the good people in your life, for a great pair of shoes, for sunshine—for anything that you feel grateful for.

7.       Walk mindfully. Your feet can be a source of stress-reduction, too. Soften your stomp to soften your entire body. We can alter our body’s state from the ground up.

8.       You’ve got the power. Until we accept we are responsible for our own stress, our stress level will stay beyond our control. Take time to figure out how to take responsibility for your stress—and how to take your stress level down.

Email, BBM, web, games, notes, camera, video, social media, are central and when we were in NYC I used Google maps and directions for walking, driving, and public transportation. Finally, I add in my rolodex, calendars, and some extra music and podcasts on a memory card. I type a lot, and prefer the QWERTY keyboard to a touchscreen like the iPhone.

How to Find Good Books to Read

Gone are the days(well almost..) when people go directly to the library/book store and stare at several book shelves, wondering what good book to read/buy. This post is for people who want to do a bit of research online before going to a bookstore to find a good book to read (whether online or your neighborhood bookstore).

As part of my New Year post, I mentioned to, “read more books”. Rather than, just preaching, I made a commitment publicly, to list a several books I plan to read this year. Yes, my way of making my self-accountable. Anyways, one of my blog readers emailed me and asked how I came up with that list. So I thought answering that in a blog post.

Given below is the process I followed. It is pretty straight forward.

Obviously, you need to have some idea of what you want to read about. Are you looking to read fiction books? Latest detective stories perhaps? Do you want to get ahead in your career ? Any area you want to work on your communication skills? You get the idea; Write a few keywords.
Example from my reading list: A few areas I concentrated on was blogging, personal development, management, personal finance etc Once you have a rough idea about what to read about, visit an online bookstore (I use amazon.com) and then search for the keyword. The search result will give you a list of books. Depending on the results, sort it by either bestselling, relevance etc

Example from my reading list: I searched for blogging, and ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income was listed as #1, by relevance.
Alternately, you can use the search engine directly.
Example from my reading list: I Googled for “best books on blogging”

Additional ideas,
• Pick another book by the authors you have enjoyed the most.
• Use Amazon suggestions or other recommendation tools.
o See what "Other people have purchased" section on the website.
o Look up a book you particularly enjoyed and browse through the suggested books for another book to pick to read next.

Now, you should have a list of books. There may be some titles that immediately catch your eye. If so copy the title, and paste it in a search engine and append book review. See what other people are saying about the book.

Example from my reading list: Search for “Problogger book reviews”
Additional ideas,
• I would read the amazon review
• Read a first few pages of the books, summary, table of content

Going through all this, made it very clear to me whether it was a book I would want to read, enjoy reading and whether I would benefit from the book.

As you would imagine this would take a fair about of time. I wanted to be fully in control of what I would read. Looking back at it now, I think it was time well spent. Don't waste your time (and money!) randomly selecting books, unless you like surprises!

Just Because You Are Angry, Opinionated, Frustrated or Jealous

It’s intangible, invisible and mysterious; it’s one of the most powerful things our world has ever produced. Each day zillions of people battle with it and make a choice.

The force I’m talking about here.... negative emotions. Numerous times, we find ourselves reacting to circumstances, which periodically seem beyond our control. Sometimes, we are not even aware of such situations, until we’ve reacted to another person’s negative inter-communications. Every time we react, we allow the other person to control our emotions.

Often, we don’t realize it. Our ability or rather the inability to deal with negative emotions has a huge impact on the quality on the “quality of life” we lead.

So remember,
Just because you are angry
Doesn’t mean you can take it out on me.
Doesn’t mean I have to agree with you.

Just because you are in a bad mood
Doesn’t mean I should also be in a bad mood.
Doesn’t mean I should treat you any differently.

Just because you have an opinion
Doesn’t mean you are right.
Doesn’t mean you have to share it.
Doesn’t mean I am wrong.

Just because you are jealous
Doesn’t mean I can fix it.
Doesn't mean you have to be a [censored!].

10 Philadelphia Pilates Instructors You Should Know

This link came up in my Google News Alert for Pilates today – 10 Pilates Instructors You Should Know | Be Well Philly – and when I looked I realized that I knew at least 5 of these teachers and helped train most of those. I am proud of all of them!

Margie Foley taught for me at balanCenter Pilates for approximately 2 years when she was completing her PhysicalMind training, and now has her own Fletcher Pilates studio at 18th and Chestnut, Centerpoint Pilates.

Jeff Prall was first our receptionist/office manager at balanCenter Pilates and then completed the full PhysicalMind teacher training with me and developed into a wonderful pilates teacher. He still teaches in my old studio (now FIT Pilates) and privately in Center City.

I’ve known Katharine Livingston since she moved to Philly and did some work with Karen Carlson and me in the early 90s. She taught a bit for us when we opened Body Precision in 1995.

Beth Downey and her ex-husband were my first partners when we opened Body Precision in Rosemont, PA. She has developed Body Precision into a top studio with a renowned teacher training program.

Carol Beringer was a client of our at Body Precision and went on to complete the teacher training before opening Pilates and More in Wayne, PA. When I started teaching for PhysicalMind Carol came over and completed the Initiation 101 mat training with me for continuing education. She also helped start the pilates programs at University of Pennsylvania and worked with the Philadelphia Flyers.

It is always great to see former colleagues and students doing well and being recognized for their great work – Congratulations to all!

I have one of those great double stainless steel sinks in my kitchen at Parrot Cay, and I use a dish drainer that is made to fit in one of the sink basins, thus freeing up limited counter space for all of my cooking. Seriously, I cook just about every meal and I make desserts and snacks; I even make my own mayo and salad dressings. It is important to know what your food is made of and how it is cooked, and the only way I have found to do that is by cooking it all myself.

What happens when a 50 year old man with a 15 year history of chronic debilitating pain is referred to the Lifestyle Pain Clinic?

Sam, a fifty year old man with a history of chronic lower back pain was referred to Lifestyle Therapies from a local health provider.  Sam was initially referred for an electrotherapy called InterX, which is an advanced electrical nerve stimulator utilising skin conductivity.  Sam had been suffering with constant deep pain and numbness in his right foot for 15 years, initially injuring his back when he was 20 years old. In his thirties, Sam underwent a laminectomy, followed by lumbar fusion of L5-S1 a few years later.  Since then he has not lived a day without pain, significantly affecting his quality of life. In addition Sam was suffering hyperalgesia in his lower back due to an incident with a TENS machine. His skin in the lumbar spine was so sensitive, wearing clothes was unbearable which was an indication of Central Sensitization. He was unable to sit in a car for more than one hour without suffering significantly. Sam had one goal, which was to return to his hobby of painting.

Initial assessment findings:

Muscle inhibition of core musclesHigh tones in gluteal musclesTender to touch adductors, ITB, and Quadricep muscles.InterX readings were >100 at 2% intensity in the lumbar region with high sensitivity and pain, even with light touch; a sign of static mechanical allodynia.

InterX was used in the chronic setting for 15 minutes during the first visit. Immediately after, Sam was able to tolerate a 5 minute massage. He was also sent home wearing the OF50-3 Octapolar Q magnet, a breakthrough in magnetic therapy. This neuromagnetic device was selected since it’s large enough to cover the adjoining lumbar vertebrae L5,S1 and L4/5.

One week after seeing Sam, he reported having pain-free moments for the first time in 14 years.  He was also able to tolerate the drive from his house to the clinic with minimal pain. During the next week Sam was disappointed that his symptoms were returning. After examining the Q magnet, he realised it had been reattached incorrectly. Once corrected, his symptoms immediately began to subside. 

After seven sessions, Sam’s hypersensitivity had dropped significantly and was able to sit and paint for 5 hours. He had no pain with touch, showing central desensitisation following the use of InterX and was also able to tolerate a much higher intensity with the InterX machine with 20 at 20%.

Since being able to enjoy pain free moments and tolerating hands on treatment such as massage, Sam has significantly improved his quality of life. However, there is still further rehabilitation required for Sam’s progress to continue such as working on stability and core strengthening.  

This experience has shown me the possibility of change with pain in chronic patients. It does not matter whether a person has been suffering for 1 year or 15 years, there is still hope and room for improvement.
