Lifestyle therapies proving very promosing for MS sufferers…

Prof. George Jelinek is a doctor who was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago and found abundant scientific evidence that lifestyle modification and natural therapies could significantly help his condition. He proved it in his own life and now helps many other MS sufferers improve their lives without solely relying on the typical drug therapies most doctors prescribe.

The response from the MS Society doctor is so typical…Very cautious that there have been very little studies on lifestyle modification, well the question is WHY NOT? There should be much more research in this area to show people how to take control of their own health without the dependence on pharmaceutical drugs. Is the MS Society investing in this research? I hope so. What could possibly be wrong with helping people get off their medications and all the adverse side-effects they bring – except that you no longer need to keep returning to the doctor for another script.

Lately I see a lot of Pilates teacher training and certification ads around the web, where instead of reading, “Discover a great degree at film and television training,” I read about how much money I can earn after taking Joe Shmo’s pilates weekend. But like many things in life, if it seems to good to be true it usually is. To truly learn to teach Pilates well enough to rise to the top of a fast growing teacher population you need to spend time with other great Pilates teachers and working with clients. Any good pilates teacher training will give you time to learn and time to teach in a supervised setting.

6 Things You Can Do More Of To Enhance Your Life This Year

You wake up in the morning, have a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to work, return home, eat dinner, watch television, go to sleep ..(or something of the sort)
Do you repeat the same sequence of actions from Monday to Friday without being totally conscious of what you are “really” doing?

It seems as if every day is centered on 3 things.
1. Trying to get a handle on what happened yesterday
2. Trying to cope with what’s happening now
3. Wondering/Worrying about what will happen tomorrow

Days, weeks, months and years pass by. Each year, goes faster than the previous one. It seems "life just happens", doesn’t it?

(When everyone around is concentrating on being Money Rich, Time Poor!)
If you haven’t figured it out already, "true wealth" has very little to do with the zero’s in your bank account. Yes, yes, I am not denying that you need money. The problem is, I don’t think any of us are satisfied and we will always want more!

As Tim Ferriss says, "the currency of the New Rich is time and freedom. Most people think they need to sacrifice their life, to get the money to achieve either one. Only when it’s too late they figure out they are wrong"

(less “fake”!)
In this day and age, more and more, the tendency is to copy others; or try to be someone they are not while living in pretense. How fake is your smile?
You are unique in many ways. Be more "you"! No, I don’t mean spending time on the internet reading gossip and other news! Ask yourself, what is it that you want to learn more about?

With everything that’s happening in your life e.g Facebook, twitter and continues updates, do you have "uninterrupted" time to sit and read?
Select your books and make a list of books that you want to read this year. I’ve already selected mine. Aiming at around 3 books a month. I will share my list in a future post and make myself accountable!

Most of us know the basic rules for ensuring we don’t cripple ourselves at our desks. The problem is that often we not actually practice them!
Eat well, and by well I don’t mean scrumptious dessert and junk food! Yes, some of might need that to get by, but the point I am highlighting here is that there should be a healthy balance.
Exercise, get more sleep, rest and remember allocate some time “just for you”. I know that I want more for myself. You probably want to be happier yourself. However, most of us really don’t know what makes us happy. You think it’s the SUV, you always dreamed of or [your need here], but you will realize that even if you get that, you will only be happy for a while. How can you sustain happiness?

Go, be more happy!

Milk price war heats up, but the real question is why would you buy it?

Vested interests are mounting a major campaign with the price of milk right now and between the farmers, processors and retailers the politics is heating up. How can the major supermarkets sell a litre of milk for less than $1 and what are the consequences of this?

To me, the more important question (aside from the effects on the farmers themselves) is what happens to the quality of food when prices are forced so low? Let me illustrate with a recent trip to the supermarket looking for tomato paste. Woolworths had their Select own brand, but where were the ingredients from? China, the home of melamine milk. Leggo’s had another bottle that was packed in Australia with local and imported ingredients, which could have come from China as well for all we know. But the Leggo’s 500g Tomato past with no added salt (even better) won the day with made in Australia from local ingredients. I couldn’t even tell you the price because that’s not even a factor in these matters.

The point is that most of these no brand or Woolworth’s and Cole’s brands and Aldi too for that matter simply outsource their ingredient fulfilling to the cheapest provider. I am sure quality and the integrity of the ingredients is a poor second to price.

So what effect do you think $1 a litre has on the quality of milk? I am sure most of the farms producing huge volumes of milk are owned by corporations and have long since lost the care and concern of the second and third generation dairy farmer. It’s all about profits now and at times at the expense of the animal’s welfare and your health. When profits have primacy then the pressure is on the cow to produce which includes calving and constant and prolific milk production. This demand is often facilitated by the constant use of antibiotics, hormones and other dubious animal welfare practices that all have an impact on the milk that we consume. Thank goodness Australia has banned the use of the growth hormone rBGH, but there is no guarantee that imported milk products are free from this toxin.

When ever I can I always go to my local IGA and purchase quality milk from Maleny Dairies.  Why would you want to save a buck to buy a cheap product that supports a flawed system?

I hope it’s not too late for me to wish you a “Happy and Joyful New Year”. You know the ritual? New Year is the time for people to set their goals of the year and many came to me to ask for some goal setting tips. Then it came into my mind. I was thinking, if they have this problem, then my readers might as well asking the same question.

How to Set and Achieve A Goal

All right, I have a story to share with you today regarding money and respect.

In today’s world, money is like the air. You can’t live without it. However, if you have plenty of it, you won’t ‘breath in’ more either. Think of those multibillionaire. Do you think they need more money to eat a better, larger lobster? Unfortunately, not everybody thinks so.

Let me share a story with you to illustrate my point.

Once, there was a rich man who had almost everything he ever wanted. The only thing that seemed to bug him is, he didn’t feel respected. So, he kept on thinking how he could gain more respect from people around him.

As he was walking along an alley one night, he came across a beggar.

“Here’s an opportunity,” he said to himself and drop a coin on the beggar’s bowl.

“Now, you should be thankful to me,”

The beggar took a look at him and ignored him.

The rich man felt angry and said, “Hey, are you blind?”

“It’s up to you whether you want to give me the coin or not but if you don’t like it, you can take it back,” replied the beggar.

The rich man became even angrier and dropped 10 more coins to the beggar.

“What about now? You should be grateful to me and thank me.”

The beggar gave him a blank look and didn’t even pay any attention to him.

“Now I’m the rich man here. At least you should show some respect to me”

“Give me money or not is up to you but whether I should give you any respect, it’s up to me. It can’t be forced.”

The rich man felt extremely annoyed.

“I give you half of everything I owned. Now you should respect me” shouted the rich man angrily.

“If you give me half of your asset, then we’re equally rich. Then why I should respect you?”

The rich man can’t control himself anymore.

“I give you all my money and possession. Should you respect me now? You must, mustn’t you?”

“If you give me all your money and possession, then I’m the rich man and you’re the beggar. I have a better reason not to respect you now,” replied the beggar sarcastically.

The End.

In the story, the beggar said it loud and clear that money does not equal to respect.

We are borne equal. Everybody can earn their respect regardless on their financial status. I am not the most handsome man or the richest man in the world but I do earn my share of respect from my friends, students, family members, business associates, readers and subscribers.

Even though money could not buy you respect, but in my humble opinion, it is not a bad thing either. Let me share one of my real life stories with you.

Though I am not a super rich guy yet, I do live in a pretty comfortable life where I can get all my necessities quite easily. In short, I’m doing okay financially.

Lately, I have a friend who is having some trouble in her life. Although it is not a serious problem, money, moral support, positive thought injections other forms of help seems to be able to solve most problems. Since she is a good friend of mine, I stepped in to give a hand spiritually, financially and plenty of time commitment. Not to buy a friend or to buy any respect from anybody. It’s just a pure sincere intention to help others.

As time goes by, problems arise. I began to hear things like:

I’m trying to take advantage on people’s misfortunes.I’m trying to buy friend, love and respect with money.I’m helping others with some hidden bad intentions.And many more.

I don’t take those negative comments personally, of course because I know that

I have a choice.

Choice #1:

I can choose to conclude that being a good person to help others is bad, I should only mind my own business, never help people again and money is evil because it creates problem.


Choice #2

I can choose to ignore those negative remarks and aware that only I and I alone can approve myself. Not others. What others think speaks volumes about themselves and had nothing to do with me. Helping others is my personal contribution to others and it not only helps me to satisfy my spiritual need but also helps to bring in more good karma.

I choose the later.

One choice makes me, the other, destroys me.

Moral of the story:

In life, we do not always have control over what’s going to happen to us. However, do not forget that we do always have the choice to choose how to react to the situation.

If you have been good to others and they are not grateful to you or backstabbed you in return, it’s their loss. Do your best and let god take care the rest.

Always respond to the situation with a thought that makes you a better person. Never respond with a thought that destroys you.

Life experience gives us lessons, not destruction. Nail it in your mind. Write it in BIG letters on a piece of paper and paste it on your wall if you have too.

Life is not about what’s happening to us. It’s about how we react to it.

No matter what happens to us, always attract the best with the Law of Attraction. Equip yourself with intense positive emotions and visualize the desired outcome. If you have problem with visualization, I recommend you to use Mind Movie. It’s very powerful software to help you visualize things easily.

Understanding the laws of universe is very important to keep us on track. It not only helps us to understand why things happen but also enable us to manipulate the law on our favour. Our reaction to anything is what really makes a difference. The right reaction can definetly earn a people lots of respect.

When it comes to respect is it something that we have earn and you are right. The bank account does not determine respect that we receive from others.

Excellent story. Even though money may be a measure of power and influence, it can never be a measure of respect. Respect is probably one of the purest intangibles that can’t be bought by any amount of money. It simply has to be earned.

Great post. Money certainly doesn’t make the man. I grew up with a lot of people who “had” money, I found that the ones with old money carried themselves better and treated others as equals, while the people who had money but probably more debt than money were quick to judge. It isn’t how much money you have it is your character and how you treat others that one should be measured.

With respect, if you choose people to respect you with or without the thinking of riches then you do something good and ethical to them – a matter of choice combined with effort.

In times like this, we’re lucky to live in a world with organizations dedicated to helping. 8 Tips to Help You Boost Your Energy

Life is better when we have the energy to meet the challenges, opportunities and experiences that come our way. But, for a variety of reasons, we don’t always have that energy. We feel tired, drained, like we just want to take a nap.

That’s why we created My Yoga Online’s Energy Boost Whole Health Program. We understand that everyone could use a little—or big—energy boost. Energy and stress. Your stress level has a direct impact on your energy. There will be lots of tips on how to manage stress as you move through the program. It might serve you to keep a stress diary. Try recording your activities and your reaction to them throughout the day.Yoga—and and the mindfulness, deep breathing, and physical activity that are a part of it—counteracts the overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system’s stress response. Need a reminder of what this response entails?Try a seated twist. Cleanse the body of wound-up energy; rejuvenate and calm the nervous system; relax back muscles, spine, shoulders, neck and hips. How-to: Sit cross-legged and place a blanket under your hips for support. Lengthen the crown of your head up to the sky. Inhale and reach your hands up, turning to the right as you exhale your hands down the floor, right hand behind you, left hand on your right knee. Breathe into this, inhaling to lengthen your spine, exhaling to deepen into your twist. Take five breaths here, then twist to the other side and do the same.Eat for energy. Stay away from sugary cereals and white flour bagels. Start your day right. We suggest whole grain cereals like steal-cut oats or old-fashioned oatmeal; lean protein such as an egg or some almonds—preferably raw; or a greens, berries, and ground seeds smoothie with whey, hemp, or rice protein powder.Sleep for energy. Hide electronic lights, use calming colours, and don’t have anything in your bedroom that’s stimulating—that includes TV, cell phones, and computers.Live for energy. Try minimizing the time you spend doing two things at once: Make phone calls before you get in your car; check your email for a set amount of time, but not all the time; don’t IM while working—focus on the conversation and get it done and over with; and try not to check your Blackberry or iPhone during a meeting. When we ask our mind-body to send energy to multiple places at once, it can be draining.Get hot, then cold. Many believe a hot-cold form of hydrotherapy, practiced by the Finns for the past 2,000 years, can strengthen immunity, increase circulation, and stimulate your whole body. Before you get out of the shower, try this: Turn the hot water to cold for a few seconds, 30 if you can, a few times.Don’t sit still. Well, we do recommend sitting still, of course. It’s an essential part of maintaining your energy. But many of us sit for too long during the day. So stand up more often, maybe two or three times an hour. If you work in an office, get up to stretch, print something, confirm something in-person with a co-worker, or go to the bathroom. Bonus: If you stand up for just one extra hour a day you’ll burn an extra 5,000 calories in a year.

Goals Begin Behaviors. Consequences Maintain Behaviors

Note: A colleague of mine shared with me via email. I thought that this would be useful to you, thus decided to make it a post on EnhanceLife

"Once there was a bright young man who was looking for an effective manger. He wanted to work for one. He wanted to become one. His search had taken him over many years to the far corners of the world." Finally he met the One minute Manager who shared the secrets of "one minute management". He was neither autocratic nor democratic; neither tough nor nurturing. He taught three secrets of the one minute management to the young person. We also going to learn them.

"People who feel good about themselves produce good results"

The first secret of the three is "One minute Goal Setting". It is about making sure that we know what good performance is. One minute manager sets each goal and its performance standards with his subordinates in a paper with less than 250 words, something can be read in less than one minute. Once a while people can spend a minute and read the goal and see whether the behavior matches the goal. We certainly have this in our OPM process.

Goal setting is so important so that the people can feel that they are achieving. When you go for bowling and if there are no pins standing, would you ever roll the ball? When there are pins but if they are covered with a paper screen, you would try rolling and might hear some sounds which makes you happy. But you would not enjoy the game much. So the manager responsibility is to make the pins visible and then there is no doubt that the people will enjoy the work.

"Help People to Reach Their Full Potential. Catch Them Doing Something Right"

Most often manages catch people when they do something wrong. They are watching behind the paper screen so that they can see the pins well. They would say that you missed eight pins instead of telling that you hit two. The second secret of one minute management is "One Minute Praising". People should told right from the start that you are going to let them know how they are doing. Once a good work done people should be praised immediately and it should be specifically about the particular work and not a general praise. Just spend only one minute for this. Tell them how good you feel and let them feel it and encourage them to do more of the same.

"We are not just our behavior. We are the person managing our behavior"

The third secret of the one minute manager is "One minute Reprimand". Sometimes really bad things happen and then, you need to go for one minute reprimand. As in the previous secret your should do this immediately. Divide your minute into two. In the first 30 second, tell what went wrong and tell how you feel about it and let them also feel it. During the second half you should remind them how valuable they are to you and to the organization. Reaffirm that you condemn the behavior but you value the person because the person is not just the behavior. Finally agree not to repeat the same.

"Everyone is a potential winner. Some People are disguised as losers, Don't let their appearances fool you"

The most important lesson we can learn from this book is,

"Goals begin behaviors. Consequences maintain behaviors."

Finally our young guy became an effective manager by learning and practicing the above secrets and came up with a new principal.

The One Minute Manager: Highlights From The Book

The One Minute Manager, was my week-end reading (last week). I thought of sharing my reading notes as a blog post.

His search had taken him over many years to the far corners of the world." Finally he met the "One minute Manager" who shared the secrets of "one minute management". He was neither autocratic nor democratic; neither tough nor nurturing. He taught three secrets of the one minute management to the young person.
So here we go...

People who feel good about themselves produce good results

One minute manager sets each goal and its performance standards with his subordinates in paper with less than 250 words; something that can be read in less than one minute!
Occasionally, people can spend a minute of their time and read the goal and see whether their behavior matches the goal.

1. Whether it's “getting that first big break”, landing the job, winning the promotion, gaining the sale, [your list here] …. you NEED to get cooperation and help from other people.

2. People are more likely to help their friends than strangers.

3. When it comes to choosing a supplier or business partner etc., Most people prefer someone they know and trust.

Your ability to be charming, to be a genuinely likable and pleasant person, will open more doors for you, than any other quality.

In theory, building good relationships and connecting with people is easy. In reality, we all know relationships can often seem like fragile things. It’s often built and destroyed by the actions we take.
Here are several practical tips to help network your way to success.

Too many people wait for others to go first. They adopt the attitude, “When and if you do for me, I’ll do for you.”

Take the initiative. It doesn’t have to be too time consuming on your part. Give them leads that may help them. For example, connect people to other people who may be a resource to them.
Why? What better way to build strong relationships than by giving something of value to other people.

Many of us have people in our lives that we can't stand. Some would swear that they are just about everywhere! If so, it’s likely that you would try to avoid situations where you would be forced to deal with people such as these. Don’t let that person be you! This seems simple enough. However, how often have you experienced people doing the exact opposite? I have experienced this times. As a customer, I get told the work will be done tomorrow, and then it is not!
Set the right expectations with others and then live up to those expectations. If for some reason you are unable to meet these expectations, keep others informed in advance so that they won’t feel let down at the last minute. The relationship you have with your boss can be a major factor in determining your destination on the career ladder. It can be a wellspring of growth possibilities if nurtured properly or a career minefield if left to go sour. Thus, developing a good relationship with your boss is your best job skill and highly useful one, no matter where you work. Never participate in gossip or in discussing the business of coworkers behind their backs. People will trust you and know that what they tell you is safe in your hands. Alliances only work when trust is present. The ability to communicate in an informal and friendly manner is essential for every aspect of a person's business, social, and personal life.
So, make an effort to improve your diplomacy, style, pitch, vocabulary & tone. You are what you are today because of your family, friends, schools, previous jobs, and places you’ve lived.
Let the people that matter to you most know that you need them. Let them know they’ve helped or inspired you. Offer your gratitude and attention for their contributions.

If you leave it all behind, you lose touch with an integral part of you.

My Yoga Online is proud to be supporting the 3rd annual Yoga in Motion event.  On April 10, 2011 participate in the 3rd annual Yoga in Motion benefiting breast cancer research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto (ON). On this very special day, our participants will take part in a double-fitness marathon of yoga and *Zumba(tm) fitness.

Just Because You Are Angry, Opinionated, Frustrated or Jealous

It’s intangible, invisible and mysterious; it’s one of the most powerful things our world has ever produced. Each day zillions of people battle with it and make a choice.

The force I’m talking about here.... negative emotions. Numerous times, we find ourselves reacting to circumstances, which periodically seem beyond our control. Sometimes, we are not even aware of such situations, until we’ve reacted to another person’s negative inter-communications. Every time we react, we allow the other person to control our emotions.

Often, we don’t realize it. Our ability or rather the inability to deal with negative emotions has a huge impact on the quality on the “quality of life” we lead.

So remember,
Just because you are angry
Doesn’t mean you can take it out on me.
Doesn’t mean I have to agree with you.

Just because you are in a bad mood
Doesn’t mean I should also be in a bad mood.
Doesn’t mean I should treat you any differently.

Just because you have an opinion
Doesn’t mean you are right.
Doesn’t mean you have to share it.
Doesn’t mean I am wrong.

Just because you are jealous
Doesn’t mean I can fix it.
Doesn't mean you have to be a [censored!].

2010 Wind Down Of Enhance Life

I have been writing EnhanceLife for about 4 years now, and over the years created a few traditions within the blog! We've come to the end of yet another year, and I end the year with something similar to the Oscars on EnhanceLife, with one minor exception. You don't need to be a Hollywood celebrity or wear a glamorous outfit to visit!

Here goes..(I haven't been written as much as I wanted to this year, so I've included some posts from last year as well)

Finally, relief after 13 year chronic pain history

Adrian presented for physiotherapy on the 8th June, 2010 and was interested in the Chronic, Complex and Repetitive Pain Therapy services on offer at Lifestyle Therapies.

Adrian had complaints of upper back pain that he had suffered for more than 14 years. His symptoms had progressively worsened in the previous four years and recently became unbearable. He also had a history of a frozen shoulder that occurred 12 months ago. Adrian was emotionally frustrated having to deal with the pain for so long with minimal relief after seeing several different therapists, including an acupuncturist, physiotherapist, multiple chiropractors, rheumatologist and musculoskeletal doctor.

On Assessment
On assessment, the findings included:
• Muscle tightness especially in the Upper Trapezius, Rhomboids, Posterior Scalene muscles.
• Tender on palpation in the upper thoracic region with hyperactive trigger points.
• Poor posture
• and weak shoulder stabilisers.

It was determined that Adrian’s chronic pain had caused inhibition to muscle activation and increased muscle tightness which resulted in weakness and poor posture. Adrian’s goal for treatment were to decrease the symptoms frequency and to return to doing specific exercises and stretches that he has not be able to do in a long time.

In order to achieve these goals, treatment commenced with a combination of different modalities with the aim of eliminating the pain and end the cycle of muscle inhibition and tightness. Firstly, Low Level Laser Therapy was used to reduce musculoskeletal pain, promote tissue repair and target stubborn trigger points. Secondly, Neuromagnetic Therapy (Q magnets) to interrupt the nerve pain pathway. These were placed on the spine at T1, T2 and C7 centrally to affect the dorsal column and branches to the sympathetic system and one over the trigger point of the trapezius.

After a couple of sessions, there was a significant decrease in muscle tightness and pain which then allowed us to work on posture and reconditioning Adrian’s muscles. We gave Adrian a prescribed home exercise program that was specific to strengthening shoulder stability and re-training posture. Other treatments included, mobilisation, soft tissue releasing techniques and using TENS.

It has now been two months since Adrian first presented to Lifestyle Therapies. He has reached his goals being close to pain-free, the frequency of symptoms has dropped significantly and he is getting back into doing the things he loves. Adrian only needed to hire Q magnets for a period of two weeks after which his pain did not return.
